Oh no, Sutton's isn't opened yet and I was hoping to avoid ordering from them. I guess I'm stuck aren't I? :-)
How is the bud count, bloom period, stalk strength and bloom size? Yes, I'm really picky.

Thanks.

I got this one as a bonus plant from Sutton's last summer. It bloomed in last fall and this spring started blooming on May 4. (Osaka's temperature is about the same as USDA zone 9b.) This year the stalks are about 36" to 37" and carry seven to eight buds per stalk. Flouces are absent this year, but the orange beards end in purple horns. As the plant establishes, it will probably grow flounces. Bloom size is medium, but the flowers are tightly ruffled with good braching. They can easily open three flowers at once. Standards are apricot, not the pinkish color shown in the Sutton's catalogue. Sutton's website is not open yet, but they are already taking orders for 2005. Stardock is sold for $22.00 this year.

I appreciate it. Since Sutton's site isn't up and this cultivar isn't pictured in the catalog, I had no idea how lovely it was.

Thanks for all the information. You've given me much more than any catalog or website would anyway. You should put this in a note to the plantfiles. Oops, maybe you have already. It's the kind of thing that I really find helpful.

If you like Sutton's irises, I recommend Bride's Blush (M.Sutton 2004). Among the last year's introductions, this one performs the best. Sutton's catalog says it's 37" tall, but the tallest stalk in my garden this spring is 42". Thick , celery-like stalks have super branching and support huge blooms that are often triple-socketed. This spring Bride's Blush started blooming on May 4 and is producing about 12 buds per stalk. Flowers are cream color with apricot color on shoulders. You'll love it!!

It is really lovely. I've never bought a Sutton's hybridization before and I appreciate the suggestions. Funny that our zones are the same on separate sides of the world. Do you have photos of your garden on DG?

Osaka, Japan(Zone 9b)

No, I don't post photos of my garden on DG. I live in an urban area and have a tiny garden. In addition, my Rottweiler destroyed the whole garden last year, and I had to build an iron fence. So my garden doesn't look pretty at all. I have lots of irises in pots, and they perform very well. My garden soil is acidic clay; so it is not suitable for growing bearded irises. I have planted apple trees, oriental lilies and daylilies where iris can't grow, and they are doing very well in my garden. I love Sutton's space age irises and grow many different varieties. You are so lucky to be living close to Sutton's Iris Gardens. You should definitely visit there during the bloom season and see their seedlings. Here's another pretty iris from Sutton's: Firebeard (G.Sutton 2001). This one reblooms too.
