Splitting headaches--Monstera question

Crystal Lake, IL

I have a Monstera (actually three in a single pot) that I have grown from seed. It is about two and a half years old, and has plenty of lovely, un-split heart-shaped leaves. I know plants need achieve a certain age before the leaves begin to split. Okay, what is that age? When can I expect my plant to start producing split leaves? I've seen pictures of plants smaller than mine with mature leaves. It is right in my west window and gets plenty of sun, so it is not a light problem. Any ideas?

It should be any time now. That's about the time line it took mine to get them. The smaller plants that you've seen with splits in the leaves were probably grown from cuttings of a mature plant. I have one grown from a cutting that has only 3 leaves, and 2 of them are split. Happy splitting!

Nan is probably correct. However, another possibility is that you may have a variety of philodendron that is not monstera and does not develop split leaves.

Thanks, Nan. Thanks, Will.

If it is not a Monstera deliciosa, then the company that sold the seeds has some explaining to do, as that is what I ordered, and they came in a bag labelled as such, along with germinating instructions.

I thought about the cutting thing almost as soon as I posted.

I'll be a bit more patient. And if it doesn't split, hey, it's still a nice plant.
