Bloom dates....

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

What is the earliest your Brugs start to bloom?? Mine are just coming back--some better than others. I think it has been unseasonably cool here (upstate South Carolina) this year. For example, here it is May and I am wearing a SWEAT shirt since it is so cool!!! WOW!!! Just wondering how everyone elses Brugs are doing!! I do not remember when mine bloomed last year--besides last year was my FIRST year ever with these wonderful plants. I did not know they even EXISTED before then!! hehehe So glad I found out about them!!! They are so delightful!

Hi Bonnie,

I think they probably bloom differently for everyone, depending on when they started being fed, put outside, so many different things to think about. For me, my normal early bloom on just a few, is in June, but the majority bloom in July, and usually more toward the end of the month. I'd love to see them come on earlier this year and maybe some will, because we had a great April with a bad last week only.

Hi Bonnie, Here in the Bay area we never know what our Springs are going to be like. Alot of times we have cool Springs and then it takes a long time for my brugs to come back from the roots. I decided that I didn't have the patience to wait , so now I start new plants from cuttings every Fall and put them in the ground after our last frost date. This year I decided to put them in the ground early and have been very fortunate that it hasn't frosted. I have several that have already started blooming.

Hey Bonnie been wondering where you went.. settled in now??

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Bonnie, I sent my pal home with several rootings recently and she posted tonight that three had buds, I nearly fainted and told her she MUST dig them up and return them back immediately!!! The only buds I've had were blown off in a storm. Oh, well, I hope you have much better luck than I've had so far and I'm delighted my pal is having such good luck, she is REALLY excited...

Bonnie, the only way to get early blooms is to dig the plant and over-winter inside or in a greenhouse or let go dormant like in a basement or garage. The ones left in the ground will take months to grow and bloom.

Laurens is such a cool town. I lived in Columbia for a few years, and met a guy named Richard? at a trade show that owns/ed the sports store up there.
Mine dont normally start blooming here until late in the summer if they were in the ground. The ones i've pulled out of the greenhouse have been blooming year-round so far.

Yeah--Laurens (at least MY Yard) is pretty cool. Lots of trees in my yard so a LOT more shade than I am used to having moved from Woodruff where usually starting in April the Sun POUNDS you! hehehe It does seem to have been cooler this year?!! Anyway, planted my cuttings (which have been inside in my mini greenhouse all winter) in as much sun as I can and have fed them some Miracle Grow at least once so far--today I will feed everything again (I only get a chance once a week to care for my plants so they have to make do the rest of the week--water, etc). They do seem to be doing well, but if they continue growing as slowly as this it will probably be July before I get any flowers??? I am impatient anyways!!! It is hard having to start over in a new yard and not having anything really blooming yet!! I DO have ONE Columbine (Purple) which has bloomed--first bud dropped already but replaced with three new ones today, also what I have finally figured out is Foxglove about to open (looks like yellow with brown spotted throat--didn't know I planted that!!), have a few Cheddar Pinks that are not even in soil but I have watered everytime I water everything else!! Have one of the existing Crocosmia in the yard producing a stalk with several buds forming. Can't wait!!

Thanks all for your imput!! Wish I could have some June flowers from my Brugs!! Just planted Datura seeds too but they tend to grow more rapidly being annuals!!

Well... you could pretend you're in zone 5 and grow cuttings inside under fluorescents like those of who are still under threat of frost. I had my first bloom in Feb I think.
