O. K. I'm hooked. Today I saw some X Insignis (pink) that were approximately three feet tall and had already started to bud. They were $65 each. I would like to add one but the leaves had holes in them. They are indoors at a good nursery here. I couldn't find anyone to ask questions. My three babies don't have names. I figured it would be nice to add a larger one with a name but hesitate because of the holes. Is this common or would I be bringing a problem home.
I know you can only guess but I don't have the experience to even guess. Also is $65 too much.? Thanks, Donna W
X Insignis
I think $65 is too much, considering you can get a smaller plant for $10 to $15 and they grow VERY fast - but guess we'll have to see what the others have to say.
Donna, insignis is one of the types, NOT a name. $65 for a 3 foot tall no name is entirely too high, in my opinion. The holes would be from a bug, a slug, or some other kind of critter. Your babies will grow fast this summer, especially if you pot them up as they get bigger, and fertilize them regularly. This isn't really the best time to get plants or cuttings, people don't want to cut plants back just as they're starting to grow. In the fall, there are usually lots of things available.
Wow, I have so much to learn. So X insignis is a type, not a name. Can you get them with a name from a nursery? I think I will take Ronna's advise. I never have been one for patience. Good thing these things grow fast. :)
Sometimes the nurseries don't even know what they have. I just bought a variegated brug from a nursery, and that's exactly how it was labeled. I asked the guy who worked there (and owned the original plant the cuttings came from) and he said all he knew is that it bloomed peach colored blooms every year that smelled heavenly. Well - that narrows it down to I think two - and I'm hoping it's a Maya. Some of these guys don't even know much about growing them. This guy was trying to hybridize the variegated brug with itself and wondered how come he hadn't got any seed pods. I talked with him a little and told him I'd give him some of my pollen later this summer for him to use. Brugs are very different from other plants. You can know alot about plants but not know a thing about a Brugmansia. I'm still in the learning stage myself - and believe me - this is the place to be to learn. Very knowledgeable, helpful and giving people here.
I'm on year two - I started seeds last year and received cuttings this year that seem to be doing pretty well.
You can buy nice plants from Logee's and get four or five for the same price as you would get that one. Sure they will be small, but I'd bet they will bloom this year, easily.
Brugie, Wowee, wowee, zowee. I just checked out Logge's website. I'd never even heard of them before. Had a whole page of Brugs for sale. Also ordered a book from Amazon so hopefully I won't have to ask so many questions. Thanks for your replies. You must tire of new people always asking the same questions.
Karrie, You must have been so thrilled to find a variegated variety. I'll be looking forward to seeing your blooms.
I hope you had a good hold on your credit card. LOL! I can go nuts in the place, and not just for brugs.
I agree 65.00 is way too much. You won't go wrong with Logees. They have nice healthy plants.
Donna - I was really lucky and got that variegated brug for $1.99 - a steal. It's already almost a foot tall - a slower grower than the others - but when I got it a month ago it was only about 3 to 4 inches tall. They grow FAST. Keep your eyes peeled for good deals - especially if you can buy them locally and avoid having them shipped. I got all my cuttings this year through Dave's and the majority of them took well and within a few months have grown TONS - now between 1 1/2 ft. tall to almost 3 ft. tall. They will bloom this year from what I am told. I heard the seedlings (ones from seeds) take the longest, and I got blooms from all of those last year.
I think that since yours was called "x insignis" is that someone got some seed pods off some type of insignis and sold them OR that it is a type of insignis that they couldn't identify.
