(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Here is another picture of it. Let me tell you for what I paid for it, I really do beleive it is well worth it. The seller is a very nice person to work with, and the way it was package for shipping, was unbeleivable. I don't even think a hurricane could have damage this package. I haven't done anything to it except to remove it from the box, and this is how great it looked.

OK...way off subject here...but this is what I thought is Alocasia macrorrhiza var. - we call it the Mickey Mouse Taro. Anyone kno what it really is?

Thumbnail by AlohaHoya

Lucky you Linda that is a beauty. I have been wanting to add this one into my EE collection. I have to wait till next year I guess. Over spent plant budjet and had a kitty emergency... I'm really interested how well it does in your climate. Keep us posted. Kin

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Seed,yes WE should have one
2pugs where did you get yours ,same as the link?
and how much is a good price?

Foley, AL

Macrorrhiza and odora does well in lower climates there sold down here as house plants. but they can be outside plants but the ends freeze off and they pup from the size. badseed do not buy one... =)

ely

Foley, AL

they want live outside but you can keep them alive......or dry the bulb out...

Aloha, your Mickey Mouse Taro is Xanthosoma atrovirens

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL CC! I wondered how long it would take for you to come back and see that.

I just wrote back to you Larry. :) Thanks!

The only way I know how to tell Alocasias and Colocasias from Xanthosomas is how the stem attaches to the leaf. I'd say Brinda is correct.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Thanks for that. You can all ignore my posts....I was writing about the wrong one! LOL

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

I got one too! Arrived today...also from Ebay. I just love it!

The way your pot looks with all the tape on it I bet we got them from the same person. Aren't they beautiful EE's. I still have mine in the house sitting in front of a south window. Still looking very nice. Yours is very beautiful to. I think the variegated plants are really something else.

I had one person tell me that EE's don't like chlorine, so can I get some of the chlorine remover that you use in aquarium and put in the water , to make sure there isn't any in it. Or will that hurt the plant. Because we are receiving very little rain right now, so I can't collect that, I was also told to fill a pitcher with water and set it out in the sun for a day, and that would get rid of the chlorine. But I have a bottle of the chlorine remover that I used when I had my beta. So if that wouldn't hurt the plant that would be an easy way to do it.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

I don't know anything about chlorine remover.

I just fill a bucket with water and leave it sitting in the sun. One day in the hot sun will take all the chlorine out of the water. Good Luck!

Diane, your plant is most beautiful also!

Foley, AL

they don't like well water or city water either. Leave water out for 24 hrs, pond water, They don't like ?alkaline? either

Brinda the micky mouse I have seen the name come up 3 ways
Xanthosoma albo-marginata
Xanthosoma atrovirens var. albo-marginata
Xanthosoma atrovirens

alocasia reproduce by something that looks like nuts. alocasia to me also seem to make a stalk in warmer climates
colocasias reproduce by bulbs "ruffles" or stolens "essulent"
and xanthosomas reproduce on the older roots.

That and pic Iding is the only way I can tell them apart.

that is kinda high on the Macrorrhiza Variegata I paid $14.00 for a 3 gallon with tons of pups that keep poping up. even if shipping was 10.00 you would have saved a ton.

ely

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

WOW ely.....sound like you got a bargain! I want to see a pic of those pups popping up....LOL.....they must be quick producers!

Foley, AL

it was a deal. The plant wasn't getting enough sunlight. It had lime green leaves. and just the tips were variegated almost passed them up. but now the one leaf that is open is just full of variegation. It was 2.5ft tall when I got it. about 150 ebay dollars...LOL

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I have had mine sitting outside under a tree for about 4 days now, and I noticed this morning I have a new leaf. Am I ever excited. It looking good still, what I mean to say is I haven't killed it yet.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

What is the varigated one that is called Milky Way? It gets more variegation with age; last year mine had an entire half leaf that was white, and has white looking stems. I just love it.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I don't know but when you find out please post. I am very interested. Please post of picture of your Milky Way. I know we all would love to see it, then maybe some of the experts on EE's could help us find out what you do have.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Can't send a picture - my camera got dropped and is broken ( my NEW one!!) Your elephant ear is gorgeous. I will try to get my friend to take the picture. Mine looks entirely different when it is small, sorta mottled or splotchy, but with age, it gets more white in it.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Mine has a completely 'white' leaf. I'll try to get a pic later to post.

Foley, AL

colocasia milky way. and roz if you want a Macrorrhiza Variegata of thoses I will drop one off next time i am in the area I have got to drop janet off one too.

Brinda read up on variegated plants turning solid white.

ely...is it good or bad?

Foley, AL

it is the lack of clorphylum "how ever you spell it. It will kill the little pups, but I don't know about the big ones.I think that it is alright to have a leaf or two that has it but not at the same time. its from the lack of nitrogen. or something on the fert exp "10-10-10- 1-8-7 20-50-20" I use processed chicken poo poo that has been boiled down so it want burn your plants. it starts growing plants nicely in 8 days. if you water with MG or Gh I think the green house 20-20-20 the brugs that like lots of fert I use the chicken and the GH. like 1 scoop to 3 gallons instead of 3 scoops. but that isn't a hardy to grow. when you get to siran or black velvet those are the ones to me that are funny on not only water but fert. and the fun part goes to wintering...

ely

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Larry, you have email!!!!!

I have noticed that some of the tiny babies that come on that are white all the way, just die off. I thought it was the heat.

I love those variegated elephant ears!

Foley, AL

well roz, In that case if it was me I would dig down to where the stem hits the roots and pinch it off. If It turns all white it is going to die anyways. all you will lose is a dead plant if you try. you can try to use a higher nitrogen fert. on it. even if you reduce the numbers of times it happens it helps. you are right the heat does aid the process but the lack of nitrogen causes it..... with varriegated plants I don't have a problem with the lack of nitrogen cause my soil is full of it. I am going to winter the marz thogh I can share more of them this fall and . I am bringing everyone a ziplock bag of the process chicken Poopoo. it works so good and I just don't know why.

ely

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Where do you get the chicken poo? Do you have chickens or know somebody that does or do they sell it someplace like Black Cow at Lowe's?

Foley, AL

oh I got it from a nursery, It is processed where it want burn your plants boiled or something. It is 18 dollars for a very heavy bag like 20-50 pounds but it will last forever it is some how time released. I do have chickens but I would not dare put there booboo on my plants...

ely

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I think I may have saw some at Lowe's, but not sure it is the processed kind. I need to check with the co-op here, the garden supply store. Maybe they have it. Do you use the alfalfa pellets?

Foley, AL

no have you?

ely

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Wow, those are beautiful!
DeeS

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I bought some and am going to try. They are really cheap. I did put some in some ele ears that I had in a pot, Black Magic, and I could see a difference, and everybody says it works pretty good. It is cheap, easy, and legal, so I thought I would try it on some stuff and see what happens. Will be gone next week, but I am planning on really going all out and use the alfalfa pellets a lot.

Foley, AL

now will it mold if you put it on top of the ground???
