How long does it take before I start seeing buds on cuttings

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I have whiskers, creamsickle, herrenhauser garten, super nova, cherokee & possibly maya or peaches and cream.

The creamsickles are about 1 1/2 ft. tall and over 2 ft. wide (from the top of the soil, not the bottom of the pot)

The whiskers are about 2 ft. tall and about 1 1/2 ft. wide

The super nova is about where the creamsickles are.

The others are a little bit smaller.

Since they've been outside most of the time lately, they have grown quite a bit and I plan on transplanting them into their final pot size very soon - and if last year was any indication for me - they start REALLY growing then.

Karrie I am new to Brugs but this much I do know, they have to Y befor they can get buds, the two branches must devide at exactly the same place, good luck.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Karrie -- if you're lucky, they'll get some more height on them before they bloom. I would want them to be at least 4' tall before they Y. I have a few that are in the 6' range that haven't Y'd yet, but the majority of my cuttings from last year Y'd and bloomed when they were about 6 months old and 4' or more tall. Hope this helps.

I thought if the cuttings were taken above the Y from the mother plant then it wasn't necessary for them to Y.

The creamsickles look Y'd - branches coming out from both ends.

I'll take a pic in a an hour or so. I have a project that HAS to be finished first.

Sorry about the wait. I was rushing to get some plants together for the Garden Club so that this man can come pick them up. I stayed up until 2:00 this morning re-potting many of them and then had to run out and buy more labels. Whew - glad that's behind me.

Here are some pics.

Here is the variegated one that we don't know yet what it is - this one also I don't think is anywhere close.

And this is a shot that I'd taken the other night, of four of them.

Karrie, watch for the subequal leaves. When you see them (one side of the leaf is longer that the other side) then your plant will begin to put on buds. Even cuttings from above the Y will Y or you would have a very lop sided plant. If you watch the growth this summer, you can see how they manage to make themselves adapt in shape to form either a tree or a nice bush.

Bothell, WA(Zone 7a)

Karrie, Where will you keep them this winter? I'm tempted to get more but since I haven't overwintered I don't know how hard it is.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Shirley, I know about what you mean about those leaves. What is so weird is my Isabella X last year had them way before they Y'd. I think most of the brugs may be that way, but not in all circumstances. I will take a closer look at the leaves tomorrow and let you know whether these are doing that yet or not, towards the tops. The Y's you see in these cuttings pretty much happened from the very get go - so I think they are branches, and that THOSE may need to Y.

White4art (um - your name has some subtly there, lol) I have a friend with a warehouse that said I can keep them there. Otherwise down in my basement. I have too many to keep them in my sunroom this winter, and after the aphid problem this last year, don't think that's such a good idea anyways. I have also been looking into getting a greenhouse someday - I don't have room for one here, but my parents have plenty of room on their land and I doubt my dad would mind - I'd just have to haul them up there and periodically go check on them and I don't like that drive in the wintertime.

Is Bothell near Seattle? They have warmer winters there than here in Spokane (much warmer). We just have warmer Summers and much less rain.

K - One of the Creamsicles has ONE leaf doing it, same for the larger Whiskers. The variegated brug has it on almost all of them and it's the smallest plant (and newest) that I have. I think I will have at least another month to wait. I'd rather them be taller before blooming anyways. I just love the scent - so very heavenly............

Well, at least some of my Daturas are budding. The ones that are have one each coming out of the very top. Should they be pinched off? (like you do with petunias, etc.....) to promote a bushier plant?

Bothell, WA(Zone 7a)

Hi Karrie, Sorry it took so long to answer. I did write a long post and then I somehow managed to erase it before I posted. I had to wait until I had more time. Yes, Bothell is Northeast of Seattle about 20 miles. I have a third garage I will try to keep them in. It has a window on the North side and it has the capability of electric heat. I usually keep my extra art supplies in there as I am an artist hence the White4Art. I'm counting my chickens before they hatch cuz my three Brugs are still babies. I recieved my Datura in the mail yesterday and it is in terrible shape. I've never seen one before but there were leaves off and shriveled and it's in a twisted shape. I don't know whether it's alive or not. I took photos when it arrived but from what I read last night here QVC does not have a good track record with their plants. It's fun watching the different posts on their Brugs. :)D

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

oh dear - the leaves all twisted? I think we are better off starting these from seeds! I just put mine out in the garden today (datura that I planted from seed) and they handled the thunderstorm and tuns of rain until after 3 hours, kinda died down to a drizzle. I have little canopies for them should there be any danger of frost, but that is very very doubtful - and I'm glad thy are out there in the good weather.

I'd put that one plant that was sorta shriveled in some water, in a tall jar.

We can send you cuttings and seeds this next year. If this doesn't work out (mail order) let us know. I know I'm not the only one that would share with you.

Bothell, WA(Zone 7a)

Karrie, Boy, if I started one from seed I would really feel like I accomplished something! That must be a great feeling. Thanks for your advise and generous offer of cuttings and seeds. I'll be looking forward to that. By then I'll know how they do in this climate. They are so beautiful I feel like I have sensitive fragile plants. I hope they will thrive here.
