New fern for my shade garden!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

I just received two of these from Deeproots Nursery. They are beautiful. He ships in pots and the plants are
just a perfect size!

Athyrium nipponicum 'Pictum - Japanese Painted Fern

I wanted that one since I saw it in a catalogue a few years back. My DD has one. According to the zones, I can't have one. Good for you Pati, they're beautiful. Her's is quite small. I don't think that they get too big.

Hap, when I ordered I had picked another Painted fern but Drew, the owner, e-mailed me and said it needed a longer dormancy then it could get here. He suggested these instead. It still amazes me about the difference in the night temps here and those in Miami. When the sun goes down here in the winter it gets really chilly. I know how you feel about wanting something out of your zone, I still long for Hostas. *smile*

PS If you want to see people crazy to grow things out of their zone, check out the Canadian Forum. The raise Plumerias and Hibicus where it snows!!!!

LOLOLOLOL........are you saying we have a *touch* of insanity Pati??? :)

Oakland, OR(Zone 8a)

A "touch"? LOL Dotti

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Aaaaaaaaaaah Dotti it's the thrill of seeing how many plants we can pack in front of windows and under lights for 9 looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong months every winter. ;) It is really exciting tho to see a Plumie growing in my bedroom........if we can't visit every corner of the world at least we have the joy of seeing/touching/smelling/growing their plants. :D Ü :D

To stay (somewhat) on forum/thread topic....... Ostrich Ferns and hostas do very well outside in my garden. :)

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

See how you are.....bringing up the Hosta thing. LOL I have looked everywhere and can't find out anything about the Ostrich Fern. Your's is the second reference I've seen to it. I have always thought of ferns as being tropical plants, but I'm learning that there are cool weather ferns also. This should come as no surprise to the people living in the NW U.S.A., they have magnificent wild ferns. *smile*

Lilypon, just found the Ostrich fern on the Plantfiles. It is a "heat hating" fern that grows well with Hostas! *sigh* Now you see that Zone envy works both ways. *smile*

Pati,

I had beautiful ferns up north, and in fact, I am surprised that so few are around here. They are in all the woods and forests around Rochester, NY, I also long for my hostas. I get a hosta-fix when I visit my DS whose wife is addicted to hostas and has some beautys; ones that were not available 20+ years ago when I live there. But think positive....we have our coleus, 24/7.
Have a great day...going "planting" with MollyMc.

It does seem that we always want the impossible doesn't it. ;)

We did have fun for 3 hours at this one nursery. It's the biggest and best I have seen in the area. We did some damage to our budgets too.....then to add insult to injury, we did lunch!! Great Day...
