Rex begonia

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

This begonia has been blooming for 2 mo. so far. It seems to be putting up more flower spikes as the older ones fade away.

This is a huge plant. Most of it is hanging out of a 6 inch pot. I guess it is well balanced or it would topple over.

That's pretty plant! I never seen like that around here.. Where can I find one? I'd love to have one !

Thanks Tricia,
I have had it a long time and don`t remember where I got it from. I do see different ones at Lowe`s and Wal-Mart sometimes though. Several of the nurseries I have been visiting lately have had different varieties also. I have got two other ones that I purchased last year but they aren`t as pretty. They would be if I would stop fussing with them. This one got ignored in the hot house and did a lot better on it`s own.

Beautiful begonia! Congratulations!
It looks like it could be a rhizamatous type.
I love them ....usually, to death by over watering...:)

You can be proud!!

Thanks for sharing your pic!

Thanks MsC,
Yes it is and because it is in a 6 inch pot, some of them are growing on the outside of the pot. Probably the only reason it hasn`t rotted from too much water.

Never saw a begonia like this one. And it looks so verrry happy in its six inch pot. Resist the impulse to pot it up larger. It's doing so well where it is. ~Blooms

Yes Blooms, I have been considering trying to put it in a larger pot but It would sustain a lot of damage in the process. Some of it is growing outside the pot. It still has a lot of bloom spikes open and more on the way.

I would start some new plants from it rather than attempt to move this one.

That sounds like a good idea George. What is the best way to do that? Maybe cut off one of the large pieces growing on the outside of the pot? I am willing to try something because I can`t see how to get it out of the pot to set it in another pot without covering a lot of leaf stems.

I agree with Geroge, I think I would take cuttings, too.
The type of begonia you have is fairly easy to take cuttings of.
Just slice off a section dabe it in rooting powder and put it down in potting soil. Keep the potting soil just moist...NOT wet.
I use a peat based potting mix with added shredded spaghum moss. You can check and see if yours will root by just clipping a small section off of the rhiazome that is hanging over the edge of the pot.If you can get a section with a small leaf or two that would be great, but I have started them with no leaves. It just takes a little longer. You can also try growin from just a leaf section. Cut a small wedge 1inch by 1 inch or so and make sure it has part of the large leaf veins attached. Stick the leaf section in moist spaghnum in a cookie jar and bright light.

It is a beautiful plant and I'd love a trade if you get it rooted.
Give it a try....you can do it!!:)
Be sure and keep us posted.

Thanks MsC. I am going to try it. I will be glad to trade with you if it works.

Great! I'll keep my fingers & toes crossed for you.
If you need any clarification on the leaf sections or getting it to root just let me know.
