Farm life the last couple of weeks has been the pits here. Had 2 cows croak; the first one the vet suspected a spinal tumor which we could do nothing about, she was dead the next morning. The 2nd cow freshened with twin heifers (both were alive and well), then she came down with toxic mastitis in 1 quarter. ONLY 4 vet calls in her in 2 days before she went belly-up. One of the twin heifers came down with scours when she was a week old, so treated her with some of the handy-dandy things I have around here for that, she seemed to pull through that. I did have to bag feed her 1 day, that was the day she got electrolytes twice and milk twice, she responded well to that. By the next day she was up and took her bottle really good. Well, the day after that i came out to the barn in the middle of the afternoon and the stupid fool had her head and both front legs stuck through a gate in the pen (not choking her off, it was a cow gate) and bellering like I don't-know-what, also had her hind legs splayed out to the side. I pulled her out and left her be till feeding time, which wasn't too long after that. She wouldn't/couldn't get up, so I lifted her, and when she did stand she was shaking all over like she was having a siezure. Next morning SHE was dead. Her scours were better, tho, so I know that wasn't the problem. The other twin is fine. Then we had 2 cows that each had to have surgery for displaced stomachs (better known as a "DA"). The first cow still doesn't have much of an appetite after 2 weeks, and the 2nd cow already has 4 calls in her because of vegas nerve problems. I think she will make it, it will just take time. I told the vet I was beginning to think that I might as well get the gun and shoot every cow that freshens, because lately they are all having something wrong. It's not a feed problem, just our typical run of bad luck. I asked one of the vets where he'd like me to put his cot, since he was here on a seemingly daily basis........He laughed. I didn't. One good thing, Spouse finished planting corn last Sat. Now, if it would just warm up to above 30 at night and 50 during the day. Cloudy, windy, and cold. Yuck. Is this really May, or did it suddenly become November and nobody told us???
