'Miner's Claim' - This Bud's For You

Northern California, CA

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I am!

Great foliage was the first attraction.
Didn't really care what color the flowers would be.

But WOW! Lookit the variegated buds!!
Doesn't take much to get me excited I guess. :-)

Cute buds. Has it bloomed for you yet? I wish the tendrils were longer, but like you say, the foliage is the first attraction. You are lucky to have it....even if it did cost an arm and a leg. LOL! Please post pictures of the blooms too. I think I've only seen one picture of an open bloom on this kind of plant before. Thanks for sharing.

Northern California, CA

It is just now getting ready to bloom after unseasonably cool weather the last few weeks. Should have bloom images in the next few days for you. I don't think the price was high for a fairly mature plant. Some are now priced at 39.99 in the nurseries and one sold at auction Friday night at a botanical sale for over $40.....forgot to go back and see what the final bid was.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

I'd be excited too!!!! Oh how sweet! I can't wait to see the blooms to go along with that beautiful foilage! I wish we had a botanical sale around here! I'll be anxiously awaiting the blooms, great job!

Thats great, thanks for sharing and looking forward to the updates.
Sure makes it tough to have a weakness for variegated plants with a new fetish for brugs then they release this in CA only. CA ought to stand for Continent Apart...

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

lol Blaine! I second that! lol!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

that looks like a great bud (buds) I have been searching everywhere to find one of these brugs but no luck, look forward to seing it open.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

They are showing up now around here. Though none that I have seen look as nice as Candy's. I saw lots of them at the Tassajara Nursery in Danville on Sunday, 5 gallon for $29.00 Then today, Navlets in Fremont had 3 of them 5 gallon for $29.00. I think they had them all winter for the leaves were a bit beat up but lots of nice new growth. They still haven't called out to me to buy one yet. LOL

Ah, I'm California dreaming now.....
Kell, you're a stronger person than I am. LOL
Candy, your buds look great! I'll be waiting to see her open too!

Miner's Claim beginning to pan out.

And here it is this evening after a day with NO sun and rain since mid-afternoon. It is a creamy white with green, no discernable color at all. My guess is that warmer weather would bring out more color sooner.

I can't wait to see the PINK! Are you going to check it later tonight, or be sensible and wait until morning? (guess which one I would do?) Never mind, you said that it's been raining, we can wait until tomorrow. THANKS for the picture!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

It will be interesting to see what it does for sure for color, but I really just love the way it is, I mean look at the recurve and I just love the shape of it and tendrils. It's just so quaint I think.

Great job wow, what I wouldnt do to have one of those things. Are these only sold in CA for real? Or am I just up way past my bedtime lol!

Northern California, CA

I just went out in the pouring rain to check on it.....a little hard to tell with a flashlight in one hand, an umbrella in the other hand, and a camera in the other hand. You can see my dilema......left the camera inside, raining too hard! LOL

In flashlight view it did look a little bit yellow peach, but that could have been just low batteries in the flashlight. Tomorrow will tell, unless we've floated off toward Hawaii.

Don't know the answer about whether they are being distributed outside California or not as yet.

have any of you seen it as an Alley Tree ?
Roger's Gardens in Newport Beach has it 6ft tall for $49.00
& they have the little striped buds on them :-)

Beautiful buds, Candy, for sure! And the flower has some nice recurve to it.

"a little hard to tell with a flashlight in one hand, an umbrella in the other hand, and a camera in the other hand"

I'm sorry, I just had to laugh. Three hands would be something most gardeners would love to have. LOL! Hope it quit raining so you could get a picture today.

Northern California, CA

Well, I've been up since before the sun came up.....course it is pouring rain so I can't even see the sun! Even the birds aren't getting up....... I just went out and looked at the flower. It is coloring up.....I'd describe it as pale pink at this point and dripping wet. I'm also dripping and wet, will try to get an image in a bit.

Brugie.......couldn't figure out how to do it all unless I had three hands!! LOL

The storm clouds are so thick it is really too dark to get a picture without the flash, so the color isn't exactly what it would be in natural light.....but close enough, will check later in the day and hopefully we'll get enough UV's to color this up some more. The original tag from the grower stated:

Quoting:
‘Miner’s Claim’ PPAF -- a wonderful new variegated form of ‘Frosty Pink’ found in our nursery. It has broad creamy yellow to ivory white margins and the same soft, relaxed habit as its parent. Flowers are salmon pink. This is a great foliage plant even if it never blooms. We have had endless comments about this plant from those who have seen it in our nursery. From Monterey Bay Nursery.

Wow, it is a winner! And the striped buds are intriging! Hope I spelled that right! LOL.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

I want of these, but guess it can't be found outside of California at this point. Can't find it on the web anywhere.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'll bet a tree or bush full of those flowers on variegated foliage, will be very easy on the eyes. Congrats.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

I think so too Shirley ...just beautiful!

Northern California, CA

Well here is 'Miner's Claim' in the light of day.....with just enough sun for a minute to show her current color. It's been about 2 hours since the last image was taken.

This is one plant that I want...mostly for a friend that will be visiting me early next year and it is the only plant he has ever asked me for. So if anyone knows of one out there PLMK. thank you

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Candy, you take lovely pictures. That is a very nice flower to have with the variegated foliage.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I want one too. Very pretty, Candy.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

I totally agree with the statement from Monterey Bay Nursery, "This is a great foliage plant even if it never blooms."

Northern California, CA

After 36 hours of cold wet drizzle and pouring rain with strong winds, here is 'Miner's Claim'. The bloom is about 36 hours old also and still looking pretty nice.

The more I see her the more I want her..At first it was for a friend that never requested a brug from me in the past..So I set out to find him one. The problem by seeing it so much I have now fallen in love with it and want one for myself..There has got to be a way!! ............help..............

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

I want this one so much myself, but it looks like it might be awhile before it is available anywhere but California. What a bummer!
