I was drying my hair the other morn and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted what appears to be a tiny new pineapple. It is just wee little, but grown from the top of the last one harvested. Not bad for here in West MD!
Fruits of Labor
Oh wow, that is neat!
Wpw I am impressed! Don't let any hummingbirds get to it or the flower will not fruit....
Carol
totally cool. how long did you have this plant before this?
My kids sent me a plant for Mom's day in 2002, it had a small pineapple growing. Finally harvested that one in the fall and cut the top and started another from it. So contrary to the 2 year rule, it has taken me three but this is definitely a fruit of labor. It is still too cold here to take it outside. I usually keep them on my Isle of Dreams. Here is a link to the beginnings of my pineapple adventure.

If you would like to see the Isle of Dreams, I can attach another link or wait till I get them and the musa and majestic palms back out on that isle! Hopefully in a few more weeks.
Well, easy enough to just post the link. This is our tropical island where all these "out of zone plants" spend their spring, summer and part of fall!

that is FANTASTIC
I noticed on Sunday when we returned from the RU that another ananas now has a tiny pineapple forming also, need to snatch a pic of it and post.
Wow is that ever cool! The pineapple plant doesn't look like the ones we buy at the stores here. Is it a different kind of pineapple plant? haighr you really shouldn't post your url....because than I see to many things that I would like....lol! Great website and beautiful plants. Was that yellow tree peony I saw in your Spring Gardens? I'm been saying to myself I want to get one but haven't yet.
:) Donna
Thanks. These are just regular ananas and quite sweet to eat. I have a yellow and white tree peony and they bloom every spring.
Love it.!!!!
Awesome!!!
Wow! I luv the color of the leaves/spikes. No way do we have pineapples like that here. Shucks!
:) Donna
Love the pictures of your tropical island. It's beautiful.
Thanks, it was just one of those crazy ideas I got and ran with it.
Well, it's a beautiful crazy idea. LOL
Always fun to grow something edible, but still can hardly believe I am growing pineapple in MD LOL!
That is really cool that you were so successful with your pineapple. I'm also jealous that you have so much space to work with in your garden too. What a great concept you have with your island, loved the photos! That much land in San Diego would cost a fortune. You'ld laugh at my teeny tiny yard by comparison. :)
I just bought a little pineapple plant with a mini pineapple like yours. Any tips for me? I have it outdoors in a pot that gets a lot of sun and then shade in the latter part of the day. I've kept it pretty moist. The mini pineapple was just too cute to not take home with me, and it would sure be great if I could keep it alive to boot! :)
I don't keep mine moist. I water once per week and when I take it inside in the fall it gets light just through the window and I water a bit less. My experience has been that they like it hot and dry just like in Hawaii with a bit of moisture occasionally. Now I don't let it completely dry up but just water once per week nominally. Good luck with yours they are really easy. I expect when you harvest that first pup, you'll be repotting the top of it and will soon have enough to take with you to the market since you're not putting in an island.
Thanks for the compliments, we have just enough space to have it just the way we want. You'd really laugh if you saw the cabin in the Mts. that we have, that is where we have the Mid-Atlantic RU - the pics are on the webpage under DG Roundup. There are 101 acres up there.
I was really pleased with the way the isle turned out. We love to travel to exotic places and I got the idea from our travels. The treasure chest and lobster pots really add to the concept and the little anchor I got on ebay from a lady in Australia.
Good luck with your ananas, post a pic as it grows up.!
wow, 101 acres?! I bet it's beautiful. You're very fortunate!
thanks for the advice on the pinapple. I'm glad I asked since I'm probably overwatering. When I was in hawaii it rained every day and was humid so along the same line of thinking I figured I needed it moist 24/7. I'll go with your plan though since you've got tried and true experience. I can't wait to harvest the little guy. I might have to have a little party in it's honor. (any excuse for a party you know...)
Here he is now and I'll try to remember to post one as he becomes a teenager.
Thanks again!
Oh, wow, I am so excited for you!!! You are well on your way. When we have traveled to HI it was hot, sunny days and just a few sprinkles at night. Actually they are probably more hardy than I give them credit guess it is just because it is so unusual to be growing them in our environment.
Actually yours is a bit larger than the first one I had and if memory serves, would have to check my link, but they sent mine in May and we harvested it in Sept. or Oct. of that year so you may be have pineapple chunks in rum before this year is out!
Keep me posted.
wouldn't that be fun! yum! :~)
