Monkey Puzzle Seeds

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Ursula from Chile sent me an D-mail to see if there was some interest in these Monkey Puzzle Tree seeds.

Quoting:
Hello Donna!

Yesterday I saw fresh piņones at the supermarket. It was not possible to find out how many seeds are 1 Kg because they are sold in sealed nets. However, I guess the 100 seeds/Kg estimate is quite close.

Maybe you should start a new thread, asking who would be interested in sharing the seeds/cost with you. What do you think?

The piņones I saw are 'fuller' than the ones pictured by nightowl.

Hugs,

Ursula

So, is there anyone else that would be interested in these seeds?

Donna, how much are they asking for 1 kg?

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

I don't know Ingrid, but I'll d-mail her and find out. I'll let you know what she says.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Ingrid, Ursula was very quick with her response. She figures $18-$20 would cover the cost of the I kg of seeds and the shipping.

You can put me in as well..Donna, do you know how to go about planting them, up?
Just start in the soil?

I am not even sure, Ingrid. We'll have to consult with Sandy to see if she can give us some advice. Oh Sandy....

The monkey puzzle is a very slow growing tree that can take 5 - 10 years before it even gets above grass height and then grows around 35 cm a year.

Donna, how OLD are we all going to be to see this in some height-let alone any considerable tree height...??? LOL
Hopefully, the nxt generation will enjoy it...LOL

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

LOL, but we'd be the happiest 80 and 90 year olds, you ever did see!!! :D

You are right, Ingrid. Maybe we should second think this one. Hopefully Wilma is checking this thread too, and she can give us her input as well. If we are all in agreement, I'll give Ursula a shout and tell her thanks anyway but ....

We sure appreciate the link Glenda. Thanks to you as well. :)

I'am still in, if any wants to give her a shot..
We'll boost those babies with some high level of growth hormone and see what happens.LOL
Even, we could have a competion between us to see whos is growing the fastest...You never know this could be fun...
Think of it another way, we could will these off..Who knows they might make $ off them or even just give them away here on DG in memory of "US".

Now,what do you think of that..Ok, I'll be quiet..LOL
Seriously, I' am still in- any other taker out there????

Well, I am gonna wuss out, ladies. If you and Wilma want to continue, you go for it. My life's too short to wait that long for a plant to grow, and I ainta about to bring the dang thing in over winter either. I swore at the end of this winter that I'd never do that again, and I won't. Let me know what you gals decide so we can get back to Ursula.

I am too lazy and will buy monkey puzzle trees this spring - 2 foot trees for $30 or so. Haven't the patience for growing them from seed.

Sorry Donna, I was in Victoria visiting Linda and Heather. Mine haven't sprouted yet so I can't really give any growing tips. It doesn't sound like you need them now anyhow though, so I guess that's okay. I haven't seen the fellow that gave me mine so I haven't had a chance to see if I can get a few more.

Where do you buy Monkey Puzzle trees, Lynn? I have never seen them anywhere.

No problem Sandy. Glenda was very helpful in giving us a very informative link regarding their characteristics and care. Hope your visit to Victoria was pleasant. I am sure it was. I would have loved to join the three of you for a cuppa coffee and a good garden chin wag. :)

Donna, we can buy monkey puzzle trees at any of the nurseries here. I bought a teeny seedling about 4 inches high, two years ago, for 4.99. It will never get big enough that I will ever see it huge, but they are fun trees. We just have it inside right now, and the slowness of it's growth tells me it will be inside for a very long time!!!

Doggone it! I guess I missed that one to bring home with me from the Roundup. Oh well, next time, didn't have enough room in the suitcases anyway. (Although, I probably would have found a way!) :D Thanks Glenda

I saw ones that were about a foot tall at one of the greenhouses we visited when we were down in Victoria on Wednesday Donna. I forget how much they were but it was definitely more than $4.99. I guess considering they were probably at least 20 years old I suppose they were worth it.
