Aussie King Hibiscus - Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

I bought this beautiful big plant yesterday at a plant sale. We have a lot of Hibiscus growing on the property (FL, you know), but I've never seen one of these. Does anyone know if they are just like the other Hibiscus only with red and green leaves....will it tolerate full sun? Sorry I don't have a pix...!@#$ camera!

Seems like I had mine in full sun, but I doubt it is as hot as you are. I also remember it becoming shaded by the other tropicals. I'm starting over this year with one brought to me last fall.

Patischell is this the one you are talking about. This one has the red and green leaves.

Yes, that looks like the one. It was in a group of 13 plants and I picked one up to admire it and a lady swooped in and bought every one of them except the one I was holding! I know she is going to use them in a hedge, which was my first thought too.

Tropical Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Red Hot'
This is a beautiful foliage Hibiscus, that the colors come out even brighter the longer it's in the sun. Colors range from green, white, maroon to hot pink with very vivid colors and patterns. This is a tropical, so if you are lower than zone 9, you will have to winter it indoors. This is a fast grower that likes to bush out with thick foilage.

Here in FL all the hibiscus go in the ground for hedges or accent plants. This one, that I managed to grab, is going into a lovely pot. It truly is a beautiful plant. Some old ones (double blooms) that were here when we moved here are blooming like crazy. If I can come to grips with this !@#$% camera, I'll post their pix.

Please do, I look forward to seeing your hibiscus. Yes I do envy where you live and your zone, I would give almost anything to be able to have flowers out all year long to be able to enjoy them. Because here in zone 6a when winter comes you have to kiss all your beautiful plants good bye, unless you are lucky enough to a GH. Which I am not that lucky. So I have to start over come spring. I do try to bring in and over winter what I can, but I am unable to do to much of that. Just jealous with envy.

I grew up in the mountains of western North Carolina. I remember mother starting all her plants in the spring, and how beautiful they were all summer. She only planted annuals so there was nothing to bring in except her Christmas cactus which grew in a big old wash tub! I've lived in FL over 50 years now and I kinda' forget about winter in the north.

I lived in Miami 50 of those years and the only gardening I did was with a machete trying to keep all the tropical plants from covering the house! Now I live 120 miles north of Miami where the climate is not as tropical so the plants are better behaved. *grin*
