what is wrong with this one?

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

I bought some cuttings last fall and they all look good except this one. It has done this since it started sprouting leaves. They start out good & then they start looking shrively and then they get yellow marks. Eventually the whole leave becomes distorted. There is no critters on it, I have kept watch religously, and zippo. And it is sooooo puny. Is this some type of virus and if so, should I just toss it? Makes me sick, I really wanted some pink ones, but I am not willing to risk my others catching it.
Here is the whole plant.

And here is a closer view of the leaves. Sorry I cannot get much closer, it just blurs. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Pudgy...what is this? My Rosebelle had leaves that looked like that all the time last year. I swore that it "hated me", but she still put out beautiful blooms.

Did yours outgrow it or is it too early to tell? This one is "Pink Beauty", forgot to mention that.

I think you have spider mites.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

My leaves stayed crinkled all the time. They were not pretty at all.

I dont' remember having a problem like that with my Pink Beauty. Someone will come along soon to help you. I bet you have a problem with aphids or mites.

Pink Beauty is one of my best growing brugs. Whatever it is, I would repot it and see what's going on with the soil. I've had plants that looked like yours and I think I'm learning that I often do too much to them. I'm definitely beginning to believe that brugs can be grown in almost full shade in my area, the brugs I've had that looked like yours, I believe, got too much sun. Also, if you have kitty cats, you might check to see if they are using your brugs for a litter box. Good luck!!! Please tell us what you do and how it works out...

There are no aphid or mites, been there done that last year. I am now an expert at finding them. LOL I have also changed soil and no difference, and I have no cats. Whatever this is, is within. Anyone know a site that I can find visuals on brug viruses? I was not successful finding one.
Oh, and Sherry, I agree about the shade, I have started growing all mine on the east side of the house, only getting morning sun & they are so much happier!

Pudgy, I had the county agent come out last year and I was told that the problem (looked just like yours, only different brug) was irregular watering, and problem beds, too low. And, I regret that I was guilty of all. I am changing my ways this year, lol. Is your brug still in a pot?? If so, why don't you put it in the ground??

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

MY brugs had leaves like that during the wet cold days. They have beautiful leaves now. Wouldn't hurt to spray for mites, tho' they usually are somewhere close by at all times, here anyway.

Sherry,
I am really good about watering mine and it has to stay in a pot. I am a plantaholic and have no in-ground space for my brugs. Besides, they do better for me in pots because the flowerbeds are in full sun. But as they grow, I advance the pot size, up to the 15 gal.
Hibiscus,
after my run in with mites last year, you can believe that I have my magnifying glass handy ALL the time now. First sign if anything & I am super-sleuth. LOL
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I guess I will just keep it isolated and see what happens unless I hear anyones thoughts on a virus that matches.
I appreciate your help.

It could be irregular watering, the plant got too cold(but that usually only affects the leaves that grow after it gets too cold, then they straighten up and are normal), boron deficiency or a virus. If it's boron deficiency, you can mix a little 20 mule team borax with water in a hand sprayer and the new growth should start being normal. If it's a virus, there is no cure.

Well, you can always do like I do. If I see a leaf that looks bad I pull it off. Get it out of my sight. Then I don't have a bad looking plant.

Pudgy, I would check the ph-value of the soil. Too low or too high of a ph-value could cause this growth. The ph-value should be between 6 - 7.
Spider mite and aphids damage looks different.

If the ph-value and the roots are ok, then in my opinion, the plant is sick. I would get me a new and healthy cutting and throw this one away. Pink Beauty is a vigorous plant and her cuttings grow without problems.

Monika, I always forget about the pH, I had trouble down here because it was high, took me a whole year to get it on the neutral to acid side and now my brugs look so much better.

Monika, you are calm and reassuring, I love to read your posts!!!

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Thank you Monika,
PH is fine so this one is going into the trash today. You have confirmed what I suspected, I had run out of possible problems except internal.
Poor baby! Going into the trash while she still has breath in her! LOL It will probably hurt me more then it will her.
I don't think she was going to be as dark a pink as I wanted anyway. (see me trying to justify my murderous actions? hehe)

I appreciate everyones responses,
Donna
