birdhouse gourd, some squash seed for postage

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I bought several cleaned & drilled birdhouse gourds from a guy on Ebay last fall, and when I asked for a few seeds, he sent every seed he'd cleaned out of them! If you're interested, LMK if you want a small (25) or a large (50) packet.

I also saved seeds from a couple of interesting farmer's market squashes, and from two different butternut squash I got at the grocery store (imported from Mexico, so I would bet they are an OP variety, not a hybrid). I'm going to give them a try, but I have more seeds than room, so I wanted to share with anyone who might be interested:

4 trades (25 seeds) of an interesting flattened, tan pumpkin
1 trade (12 seeds) of a thick-necked butternut (half trade has been taken)
1 trade (25 seeds) of a very long-necked butternut
2 trades (12 or 25 seeds ) of a colorful winter squash that looked to me like a Kabocha (farmer said was not a hybrid) (half trade has been taken)

I also have sugar pumpkin seeds (pie pumpkin) and Ogen melon seeds saved from a couple of years ago that should still be viable (they look fine), probably 2 trades of each. I'd sprout these before planting, just to be sure about the germination.

I'll try to post pictures of the butternuts and the pumpkin later when DH is off the other computer.

SASBE is fine (49 cents should do it, 60 if you want a bunch), although I can nearly always be tempted to trade. No postage is necessary for anyone "evening up" an earlier generous trade. Email me with your address if you're not on the exchange.

I'll continue to edit this post as trades are claimed.

You're welcome! BTW, my brother & his family live in Coreopolis. We were just out your way for our youngest niece's First Birthday -- big fun! I'll get your seeds out Monday or Tuesday.

Locust Grove, AR(Zone 7a)

Hey, Critter! You have mail. I would love to have some of those gourd seeds.

Soquel, CA(Zone 9a)

hi critter,
I would love some birdhouse gourd, kabocha and butternut squash seeds (thick neck please), and ogen melon!
25 is way more than I need though! How about 9? : )
I have purple opium poppy, blue convolvulus bush, purple and white foxgloves, lavender and violet canterbury bells, marigold villandry (deep red and 3' tall), nigella, calendula, tatsoi, and leek seeds.
thanks!
tatyana

Tatyana, your seeds are in the mailbox & will go out tomorrow! I sent you half packs of the squash & melon, so they'll still be available if somebody else is interested (I edited the quantities on my initial post accordingly.).

I'd love some purple poppy and canterbury bells seeds! Cool!

I'm curious about the convolvulus bush.... in PlantFiles, I only only found convolvulus as a twining / vining plant, not unlike morning glory.... how big does the bush get? maybe you could send me just a few seeds to try?

I'm in the exchange too.

Thanks!

Soquel, CA(Zone 9a)

you got it!
try searching under royal ensign or bush morning glory. they only get like 1.5-2' and the ones I have are blue. mine just sprouted in 3 days!!

Hi,

I would like 6 -8 ogen melon seeds if you have some left. I could send you six lakota squash seeds if you like or sase.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Makshi, I'd like to try the lakota squash -- after last year's fiasco with the squash borers, I'm experimenting with several varieties this year in an effort to figure out which ones may be resistant for me.

I'm going to try to get my act together later this week and start a leaf trading thread in the AV forum with descriptions & some photos of my African violets.... if you're interested (you had that lovely one with variagated leaves from Lowe's), we could send leaves and seeds together.... LMK.

Critter,
Got the seeds and many thank you's! Sending the postage today out today! Sorry again for the mix-up!! ~ Suzi :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You're welcome. I hope they do well for you! It's been years since I've grown gourds, and never in this area, so I'm looking forward to trying them, myself! Hopefully we will make a lot of birds very happy next spring. :-)

Moon Twp, PA(Zone 6a)

7 y/o DD will be happy and learning at the same time! Birds get homes instead of them trying to build in my dryer vent! It's a win-win situation! Thanks! ~ Suzi :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Well, since it's probably sparrows trying to nest in your dryer vent, I'm not sure they will go for the gourds instead... they sway in the breeze! I purposely put smaller "door" holes in mine so they would't work for larger birds -- I'm hoping for bluebirds, maybe wrens.

BTW, I saw the coolest birdhouse in a catalog the other day.... the back of the birdhouse was plexiglass, and it had a couple of suction cups so you could stick it on to a window. I'll bet DD would really love to watch them up close like that.... I'll be the birds would go for it, especially if you have trees or bushes near your house or if you have a feeder. I'm thinking you could make one from a regular birdhouse (one of the simple lean-to shaped ones) by replacing the back panel. You might also consider putting a piece of one-way reflective stuff on that part of the window, so you can see the birds but they can't see inside.

Moon Twp, PA(Zone 6a)

Hmmm that is a very interesting idea!! And reflective stuff makes it even better! :)

Hey Critter!

I got those seeds this weekend! Thank you again for being so generous.

Have a great day!

You're quite welcome! Be sure to let me know when you're ready for a bunch of seeds for your cottage garden, and remember that you'll need to dig your veggie garden bigger next year..... with any luck, I'll have lots of tomato & pepper seeds I can send you for next season..... email to remind me in fall, please!
