Help! New Gardener needs Seed!

Louise, MS(Zone 8a)

Hi everyone. I'm a new gardener in zone 8a and have recently been bitten by the gardening bug. I've been growing annuals on my apartment balcony for a couple of years, but now I've got a yard of my own and plenty of space for plants!

I'm looking for seeds and lord knows things that are common and dull to all of y'all would be new and exciting to me. I've got a good mix of sunny and shady spots in the yard, so most anything goes. Can anyone help a newbie out?

Thanks so much,

Bill

Hi there. A lot of amazingly nice people have asked me what seed I would want and boy is that hard to figure out. I've looked around Dave's Garden and the web and these are the plants that most people seem to like. I'm not sure if they are easy to start from seed or not, but they sure sound nice.

Things I think I would like:

Achillea (Yarrow) (I have 'summer pastels')
Aster (I have Japanese Aster 'shogun')
Astilbe (I really want some of this!)
Barrenwort (Supposed to be good in deep shade)
Blanketflower (I have 'goblin')
Bleeding Heart
Calendula
Campanula
Cleome
Coleus
Columbines
Cosmos (I have 'sea shell')
Coralbells
Coneflower (I have the common purple kind)
Coreopsis (I have 'moonbeam' and 'american dream')
Daylilly (I have 'stella de oro'and 'pardon me')
Gazania
Gomphrena
Hardy Geranium
Ice Plant
Larkspur
Lavatera
Love In a Mist
Million Bells
Penstemon
Phlox (I have 'david' and an unknown purple)
Russian Sage
Salvia
Shasta Daisy
Snapdragon
Strawflower
Virginia Bluebells
Zinnia

I guess the Japanese Aster 'shogun' is the only uncommon thing I have right now. I bought it at the garden center this week since the leaves were so pretty. I'd be happy to save seed from it or anything else I have for anyone who is able to assist me!

Many thanks again to everyone!

Ya better learn how to duck real fast Bill, Sheran will knock you down in a giant powder puff of flower seeds... LOL!

Heh... I think I can take it! If I run out of room to start things I have plenty of leaves and peat moss and make a mean lasagne bed now. (Something else I learned about on Dave's!)

I hope to be able to return some of the kindness I've been shown here!
