They recovered quickly

Aristolochia Gigantea.

Susie, I live inland in the San Fran. Bay area and we can get up to 110 during the summer.
I just bought a Aristolochia Elegans this morning and was wondering if I should plant it in full sun or morning sun afternoon shade ?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have A. Gigantea in part sun and also in full sun, the worst damage it gets is from the wind. The A. elegans is in morning sun, afternoon high shade from palm trees. It's on a wood fence, I know it gets hot there. The roots of all the Aristolochias are shaded.
I love the Dutchman's pipes, I have about 8 different kinds. I think I'll start collecting these instead of passiflora.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

This will be my first time to grow one. But it was under $10. so I figured I would give it a shot.
I do have trouble growing tropicals outside here because we are so dry during the winter.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Yeah, it's hard to remember to water in the winter, lol. I let some stuff get too dry this past winter. We were drier than usual, way behind on rainfall.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I meant to say that we are so dry during the summer. And we do have frost and freezes during the winter.

Cala-
do you have ringens, yet?
-T

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm so excited
some of the seeds for these have germinated
they are the ones you sent
they are only an inch tall but I'm picturing the blooms....LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

You will love them CC. Were you the one who wanted a gigantea? I think it was you and Mel.
Taylor, I have a little ringens. It is a year old, but it's had a rough life, lol. I really really want fimbriata, I've tried seeds three times and I'm no good with them.

Thanks for sharing your Aristolochia. I sure do like the blooms on this vine. Like someone described them before they look like something out of a Star Trek episode. I might have to give this a try in the garden.

Center, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm trying these from seeds and I'm not having much luck. Is there something special you have to do to them to get them to germinate? I only haave a few seeds left and want to make sure I get at least one plant. Any help?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Well, the first ones I ever planted(years ago) came up so easy. Beginners luck! Ever since then, I can't get them to germinate, or if they do, they don't live.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I've tried them time and time again....never worked
these came from Susie..and I have some babies now...maybe they were fresh and thats why it worked?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

PATRICAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.....where did you get it???

How big do they get? Gosh, so many plants and so little room. What am I going to do???? Yesterday my DH told me to please leave a 1 ft walkway to the gate so he could get out. HELP!!!

Susie, can you post pics of all your different kinds??

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Patricia, I thought the A. elegans got shade, well, I watched the shade as it moved in the yard, and A. elegans gets about an hour of shade in the afternoon.
Kell, I will take a picture. Some look pretty battered today, I may wait till they recover a bit. I have:
A. clematitis
A. ringens
A. trilobata
A. elegans/litoralis
A. gigantea
A. grandiflora
A. microphyla/durior
A. leuconeura
I would like to find A. fimbriata and A. tomentosa. I think Logees has fimbriata, I need to go look at their catalog again.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, what a collection, Susie.

Cala-
Want to swap a finbriata tuber for a grandiflora?
-T

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I just got grandiflora, not much to swap yet, but as soon as it grows I will trade!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I hope you are saving seeds too from many of your new exciting tropicals Cala. :)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Yes, I will save seeds.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

:D Ü :D

Center, TX(Zone 8b)

Remember me when you get those seeds. Pleaseeeeeeeeee! lol

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Brendabloomer, which aristolochia did you want seeds for?

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Susie, they are beautiful and it is hard to believe that they recovered from the snow. They are tougher than I thought and yours seem to have grown so fast since winter. I bet your yard is beautiful now.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

It is getting there Frannie. The neighbors think it's just perfect, but I still see dirt in the flowerbeds, so there's room for more plants, lol. The aristolochia have grown by leaps and bounds. I had to cut one of the giganteas back, it was taking over the whole corner of the garden!

Center, TX(Zone 8b)

Calalily...The pic you posted here is the one I'm trying to root. Started more seeds yesterday. These seeds were labeled Dutchmans Pipe so I guess this is the same thing. I would love to have any of them. Gusee the key is fresh seeds. What is the germination time?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I think the germination time is supposed to be around 21 days. I haven't had any luck rooting any of the aristolochias.
