Never grown a Brug and now I want to

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

Hi all. New to this site and love it so far. I am trying to update my trade list but havent gotten but the most common of plants (other than the Datura Inoxia) on it. I have a greenhouse and I am a solid zone 8 I would love to try some brugs and see if they hit me as hard as other flowers have. I know nothing about them. Do cuttings root easy? I have a mist chamber. Ok, I am grasshopper - teach me! - and I would love some cuttings if anyone can spare. I promise if I get them to size I will offer them to others. SASE or trade for any on my trade list?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sorry, I have too many I am due to send out now to add any others till I get caught up. But I did want to welcome you. I see you just joined Dave's today. Had you ever seen brugs before? You will love them.

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

Thanks Kell - I have seen them before and was always impressed by them. I just didnt have the room or the greenhouse and now I do. They are just near impossible to find for purchase around here and after seeing all the brug fans at this site I just knew I would be better off getting something from people that knew what they were doing.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Sigrowers - I will send you some cuttings....hopefully you will "pay it forward" to others in search of this happiness. Send me an email with your address...I don't have much, but they make ME happy!!!

Thanks Carol - I can already tell this is going to be one of those groups I can say years from now that I still belong to. I promise that if I can get them to size, I will offer the same to someone else wanting to give them a try. I am so jealous of your "zone" I bet you have my favorite trop. all about you. I just love Plumeria and it frustrates me here year after year. Now I have a proper greenhouse though and I plan to get serious about those this year ;-) Thanks for your kind offer, I will be sending you email soon.

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

Welcome SLgrowers and oh boy are you in for it..lol.. I have heard that these plants are extremely addicting and the wonderful folks here are so generous to share.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

SL. welcome, and I can say without a doubt that you will be an addict like us in a very short time, and with a greenhouse it will be twice as fast for you, mine are sitting all over the house waiting for warm weather to go outside.

Good Morning, and welcome to the brug forum. I'm sending out my "last" six boxes of cuttings or plants today. This fall I'd be happy to help you out with cuttings from any of my plants that are available. They do root easily. I wish my plants were further along, but the cold winters in Iowa don't help my stuff get going quickly. Once in a while, plants will send up basal shoot, and if I have any that do that this year, I'll sure share. Just send me an email to jog my memory from time to time. Again, welcome to the brug forum and Daves Garden. I'm sure you will enjoy your time here.

Thanks for all the welcomes. So how bout some advice on brugs. How large do they get? Need support or self supporting? Bloom day , night, continuous? pests? soil? Ok, ok I will go get a book but sometimes experience is much better than a book so I wanted to ask. lol Looking forward to whatever you send me Twyla and thank you for the offer. I am sure I will get hooked once I get a few going.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Slgrowers ~ Welcome from me too, I am pretty new and I advise you to get a beverage, and maybe even a snack, and go back through as many previous threads in this forum as your eyeballs can handle!
There is so much information that these terrific people have posted, and although a book is helpful, you are right about the experience... especially check the posts of others who are in your area or zone.
The best advice? Have fun!
Good luck!

Brugs can get quite large. (Self Supporting if in the ground) I've had them 8 ft. tall or more and 4-6 ft. wide. However, they can be controlled by keeping them to one trunk if you wish. That keeps them a bit more narrow, but the height will still be there. Brugs generally start to open at night. The color for most of them will be yellow to white to whatever color they are supposed to be in the end. They can change color in a matter of a couple of hours. The blooms will last for several days, depending on the temps. The cooler the temps, the longer the blooms last for me. They generally bloom in flushes about a month apart, but some brugs have blooms, tho not as many, most of the time. I use a soilless mix that drains well. I fertilize twice a week with a good water soluable fertilizer. Pests can be mites, caterpillars, slugs, aphids, and I'm sure others. Earwigs have been mentioned before as well. This reminds me of a letter I recently wrote to someone asking the same kinds of questions. LOL! Have fun with your brug(s) and remember that if you want more, and I'm sure you will, this fall many of us will have cuttings to share for next year's beauty.

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

Thanks Twyla - Got your seeds in great order. I will be planting them this week and will let you know how they do. Thanks for sending them.

Sherry - North MS - Just below Memphis TN. Howdy Neighbor.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

There is a dog show in a little town just below Memphis, the name escapes me, but I love going there. Are you near Tunica?? Whatever we are only a couple of hours or so from each other. Which brugs are you growing and how are they coming along? Do you see lots of brugs in the nurseries in your area??

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

Sherry,

Hiya - Yes, I am about an hour from Tunica. Not sure about the dog show, I do not think I have heard of it or would have went. I love dogs. To answer your question I am new with brugs, just have the seeds and a few cuttings others here at DG have been kind enough to share. I never see them in the nurseries around here, that is why I was pleading with the DGers to help me out. LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

And, I keep telling DG the same thing, we cannot purchase brugs around here and if they have one they want $30+, and they are sickly appearing. Do you winter yours outside?? Which ones do you have??

N. Mississippi, MS(Zone 8a)

This is my first year for brugs. I only have a few cuttings received from aloha that are rooting nicely. Wish I could be more help.
