I've been wanting to try a brug for awhile now, but haven't had a way to overwinter it. By this fall I should have a way of doing that. Does anyone have any seeds they could share? I have lots of seeds for trading or I could send SASBE. lmk
Sherri
May I join you?
Hi Sherry, Welcome to the brug forum. If you want a cutting of Butterfly for postage, I can send you one. Seeds would never bloom this year. By fall, a lot of people will have seed to share, I'm sure. Email me if you are interested and we can exchange addresses. I might even have seeds if you prefer that. Your choice.
Shirley
Brugie, thank you for your offer, but I've already been taken care of. ;-) Dave's people are THE BEST!!!
cherishlife - if you don't say yes to Brugie's offer, trust me, you will be sorry. Brugs are like chips, you can't have just one!!!
Welcome to Brugs, now get you some Datura seeds right quick, they will bloom this summer if planted NOW!!!

Sherri, welcome to the brug forum. What Judy says is s true!!!!
welcome to the Brug nut house C. yes we are all Brug crazy I started in July and take all I can, especialy it they are already rooted.
Doris
OK OK, I'll tell the truth. I did accept Brugie's offer AND another person's offer for seeds. I was afraid to seem a little greedy so I was trying to remain discreet. (would that be the right word?) lol Since the person who offered me seeds did not post on here, I assume that he/she wanted to remain anonymous. But I really do want those seeds AND the plant. Isn't that awful of me?
I actually have some Datura seeds, white and purple, but haven't planted them yet. I guess I need to get that done, huh?
Twyla, thank you for the offer, but I think I'm going to have enough for now.
Thank you everybody, for the warm welcome.

Sherri, it's not awful to want only one - Judy is right, they are just like chips! But be forewarned, this is probably just the beginning of a lifelong addition.
Hi Sherry, Welcome to the Brug Addiction Forum lol....have fun, I know you will....I do~!
:)
Julie
Hi Sherri, believe what they're telling you. We all started where you're at. It escalates, quickly, from wanting just one to NEEDING every one you can get your hands on. You've been warned. LOL
I know I NEED, just one more!!! lol lol
You all are not going to believe this one, I've turned down offers of cuttings three times in the last month. My poor DH says I'm for sure gettin' sick and he wishes I would just give in and go to the doctor. I said sure and when he asks what's wrong do you think he will understand when I say, "I don't want any more plants"? Oh Me, I just realized I went to both Wal-Mart & Lowe's today and didn't buy a single plant.
Maybe I AM getting sick.
Hi Sherri. Welcome to the addiction
Judy, you have better control than I have.
Hi Sherri and welcome. Heed everyone's warning. Once you get that first sniff of a Brug it will be too late with no turning back.LOL
Welcome Sherri! We will be sure to bring this thread back up when you show us more pictures of ones you have accumulated next year LOL.
Thanks so much for the warm welcome, everybody. I have a couple of questions. Obviously, most (if any) brugs are not hardy to zone 7a. However, I've noticed that the Butterfly that Brugie offered me is hardy to zone 7b. I assume that the leaves would die back to the ground if left out in a freeze.....? And if it's hardy to zone 7b, would it be possible or advisable to mulch it really well (because I'm zone 7a) and let it come back naturally in the spring? I've noticed that there are several different methods to overwintering brugs and I assume that it would depend on the brug as to what I need to do with it.
Now don't sweat it, I'm going to do what's best for the brug. lol I just need to know if I can treat it like a perennial if mulched properly. It very rarely reaches 15, or 10 degrees here, much less 5 degrees which is what is listed on the information for Butterfly.
Thanks so much for your help.
Sherri
Hi and WELCOME.
Gee where did you read Butterfly is hardy in 7B? I live in 9B and have lost brugs in our 1 freeze a season to about 28 degrees. In fact it was BF that got some frost damage 2 years ago, it never did well after. My uneducated opinion would be you would lose more than you would have survive in that zone. Though I am sure some people in that zone will speak up if I am wrong.
What lots of us do, me included, is take cuttings of our special ones in the fall and grow them inside all winter......just in case. You can always try, I am sure some have survived, but I would not bet the house on it.
Brugs grow so quickly, you can grow them to flowering stage fairly fast from cuttings. And some Davers here did great experiments with bubblers over winter, and made rooting cuttings even easier.
Hey Ada, what do you think???? Now hers will be an educated opinion. LOL
Wow. I have never seen "enough" and "Brugmansia" used in the same sentence...much less the same para.!!! Cherishlife...you will soon be groveling at the feet of the masters...begging and pleading!!! :~) Actually...you don't have to...everyone here is so supportive and encouraging = enabling.
A newly converted total devotee/crazy about Brugs.
It's ok, Kell. I'm not about to leave them outside now, and I will definately be taking cuttings just to be sure I don't lose them. I got my info from this page http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/51492/index.html Obviously some information needs to be changed. I was really wondering about that anyway.
Sometimes people post that they grow them in their zone, but aren't thinking about growing them over the winter. I agree, there needs to be an adjustment for how that information is gathered and saved. I will say that someone in Kansas City found that one overwintered beside his house last year, so I guess it can be done with the right conditions.
You're probably right, Brugie. One of the best micro-climates is right beside the foundation of a house.
Hi Sherri....nice to see you here! You're hooked now and there is no turning back! LOL
Hi Sherri!!! Nice to have you join us!!!! SherryLikeTheWine
Thank you, Brinda and Sherry. I feel very welcomed. :-)
Hello all, I'm new on this forum also. I've received some brugs and some datura seeds in a robin and I've looked at all the pics and they are gorgeous! I have a few questions though. All the pics are of just the flower(and rightly so) but do they need supports like a trellis or are they a free standing bush? It talks about cold hardiness but what about heat/sun? It would make a great difference whether I put them on the northside or the east side of the house. Thanks for any info/help.
-Juli
Welcome Sherri ... enjoy!! Glad to have you with us!
Hi Juli,
I would put them (brugs) on the east side of the house, but some of them can stand full sun. I don't know how hot it gets at your place, so the east would be good enough. I try to put some of my best ones in morning sun only. The datura can stand it sunny and hot, so give them all the sun you have. As for needing a trellis....no, they don't. In California, some places, brugs make trees. You won't have any trouble with them falling over unless they are potted and get top heavy or the wind tosses them around for you. Datura are bushy or sprawling by nature, but free standing. Welcome to the brug forum and don't hesitate to ask questions. You will get plenty of good answers. This is a nice group of people here, willing to share information and plants when the time is right. Enjoy!
Thanks for the info! I have an eastside spot that could use something big. It does get hot in the summertime up to 110. The eastside gets the worst of the afternoon heat that's why I thought maybe the northside would get a slight bit of shade. Eastside gets only morning sun before it get's into the 100's. Southside has it ALL day long.
