From cuttings and seeds to a hoop house...

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Here's what an innocent curiosity in November 2004 has caused
--- 3 apple trees to disappear,
--- the DW to say "...see? I told you so! You're nuts"
--- make some wonderful new contacts with similar pursuits

22 Nov 04 my first six wilted sticks come from mail order.

16 Jan 05 and the sticks are starting to take off. I'm soon to visit Renee's basement and see BIG stuff.

14 Mar 2005 - the six have taken over the front window. The DW keeps asking me what my favorite suitcase is...
The windmill was picked up on the way back from CO and along the way I got to visit Brugie... and SHE has greenhouse.

02 April 2005 - by this time I've ordered a Hoop House kit and it's arrived. Figured I'd prime and paint the plywood before putting together the end gables

10 x 12 didn't sound that big until I started trying to pick a site.... AFTER the kit arrived.
This was the chosen spot and you can see 3 ten year old Apples that's been whacked and ready to be dug out.

07 Apr 2005 - The morning after I got it skinned and now it's ready for some paint.

27 Apr 2005 and here's a series of 4 shots taken this afternoon
In this one, Peaches and Cream is center stage and if you go back to the first picture, you can't see the plant but can just see the label in the middle of those wilted 6. I love this plant!!

Also that fat little puppy in front of P&C is one of the ones I started from seed Brugie sent me this winter. I forget the cross.

More of the original 6 and some girlfriends that's wandered in.

The bench side with some recent cuttings, the latest seedlings to sprout from Brugaddict, tomatoes ready to go to their first pot and some of the tree seedlings I started this winter. There's still a bunch more stuff in the guest room and basement.... sigh! I should've got a BIGGER HH.

This is a family shot I promised Brugaddict. I had eight germinate from the seeds she sent last month. They are an unknown Pale Pink x Adora.

Thanks Julie!

Everything is looking great. You can pack a lot more in there, I'm sure. How much longer before you can plant out?

2 years ago we had a heavy frost on our average last frost date - 31 May.
I'm kind of planning on a big planting and drinking party that weekend.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Looks great, Blaine.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Your plants look great. I love your HH. It seems that whatever size you get it's just never big enough.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

So neat and orderly. The plants look great and I love your hh. Everything is out of my gh now, except a few that rooted in water and are now adjusting to soil (and some still in water - I'm running way behind). I've got to get more potting mix this week end.

This time next year, you'll be surprised how many you have.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Its looking great and hope the windmill is still not in your living room, LOL

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

AWESOME BLAINE!!! I got chills, they all look so wonderful and healthy. I am trying the watering/fertilizing from the bottom also. I think it's an excellent way to avoid overwatering from the top, I've lost so many seedlings like this. Thank you for posting a pic of them, you're doing great...love the red pots too hehehe!

Also to say, your GH looks so neat and tidy and so very clean wow! I'm impressed wooo hoooooooooo! Yep...you gonna needa nuther GH addition to the one ya gots LOL....

Thank you all and most likely it's all partly your fault. ;-p

The windmill is out in it's own bed although spun the DW up for awhile over it. She wanted to know where it was going and I said No Where. Among other things, I reminded her of the regular low-level complaints about how rusted my original windmill is. (I like it) So I told her by keeping it inside, it can stay looking brand new and she can dust and wax if it'd make her feel better.

In a hurry I had just put a thick bed of shredded leaves in the HH but I'm catching a little heat for tracking them. I go out for a looksee and to open with the first cup of coffee in the morning in slippers. The leafs act like velcro with socks and the warmupsuit sleep wear. Until I get back in the house that is, then little pieces of leaf trail me around the house.

Loved your story and everything looks great. I am glad that you got a HH and some how they always wind up being too small.......lol You will be like the rest of us......we just keep getting plants and in no time at all, you will be cramming everything in from the bottom to the top. All your plants look great.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9b)

Blaine, your HH and plants are looking great. You are quite the green thumb. Did you plant your seeds in soiless seed mix?

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

8ftbed, I just figured out why you do sooooo good with all your flowers, it's not just that you have a green thumb but, you go out there in the morning with that cup of coffee prancing around in your slippers and sleep wear you get your plants all awake and excited and they are ready for a great day. They know if they aren't good that day they may not get to see you the next day.

Your hoop house looks great and of course your plants are thriving. You do have the touch.

BTW who did you get your HH from? It looks like a miniature barn, I love it.

plant_fiend - soiless mix but with the brugs I've been mixing in a brick of coir to half a bag of the potting soil. That stuff absorbs and holds water so readily, I like to use it in pots in the house and bottom water. When you've got enough mixed in and it's time to water, you fill their tray sluuurrrrP! Sucks it up pronto.

Linda - 'Hoop House' is their name and at www.hoophouse.com. The neighbor suggested painting it hunter green and the DW was thinking blue but I liked the barn look and the red windmill is in the opposite corner of the backyard so there's a little continuity.
