potting up cuttings

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I think I may be potting up some of my hoya cuttings too soon . Could someone give me an idea of how soon after roots appear should I wait til I pot them up. Also how large of a root system should the cutting have before repotting? I have some that have one or two roots and some with quite a few roots. They are in water and I really think they need to come out of it..

David...I pot UP when new growth starts to appear at the top of the node...or when I pull the cutting it is firmly ensconsed. I would think that in water the root system should be fairly large...

When I use water rooting, I pot up the cutting as soon as I see a couple roots. I use a perlite/ vermiculite mixture on those that have just a few roots. If they have a bunch of roots, I will pot them in soil. I think the trick is not to pot them up into too large a container and let those puppies get nice and root bound.

Carol, along this line.......could I use a tiny bit of starter fertilizer that has "root encouraging" chemicals in it when I pot up new Hoya rootlings? Or could I put a spoonful of rooting hormone into the soil mix? Would that help them "go faster"?

I often use a very weak solution of SuperThrive when watering the cuttings...and when any root growth has started, a weak solution of balanced fert... I don't add anything to the propagating mix.

Mel,

I'm just afraid that if I lave them in the water too long they will begin to rot. I potted up some already but thought i'd better ask anyway before I pot all of them.

A few have one little root and some have several roots. I am using 2" pots to pot them into and from there it will be into 4" when I see roots from the bottoms of the 2"pots.

This is my first experience with rooting hoyas, especially this many and I tried 2 methods. Some I rooted in soil and some in water. The ones in water have superthrive added directly into the water and the ones in soil get misted daily with it.

Cats, I think it's best not to go up more than 1" when potting up a hoya.

When I root them in water I make sure they have at least 2" worth of roots before I pot them, and when potting them up, your method of waiting until you see roots coming out the bottom of he pot is what I do too.

Good luck!

Christine.
