my first hoya.. i bought it yesterday (for $2)
and since, have been informed that it's a very slow grower...and may or may not be slightly persnickety (requiring actual attention)
any advice from someone who's grown this plant?
i know i should probably re-pot it... and will have to bring it inside for the winter.. but that's about it
i know nothing about hoyas...
i just saw this "creepy little plant" at the greenhouse, and had to have it, only later did i find out that it's a hoya.. lol

Slow grower, Yes at times :)
Finicky, not really.
Keep it in that small pot or repot into one equaly sized. Keep warm (will not tolerate frost), in bright filtered light (some direct sunlight will be tolerated, too much will burn leaves). Now most importantly do not let the soil dry out completely. Underwatering is IMO the biggest mistake made with this Hoya. Yes the leaves and stem look nicely thick and succulent but the root system doesn't tolerate dry conditions.
Also inspect your cutting closely for mealy bugs as those guys go unseen for a long time in those twisted leaves unless one looks for them.

thanks a bunch
ok.. so i dont even have to hunt down another pot for it.. that's cool! lol
i originally put it on a rack on the patio kind of under the overhang of the house, no direct sunlight.. but lots of filtered light, guess i'll just leave it there for awhile and see if it stays happy
thanks again!
i love plants that like to be ignored :)

I saw this plant on the exotic angel plants website. I think it's a very interesting looking, and beautiful plant. The only place I've ever seen one im person, is at a nursery in a town about 45 minuts away. I, like you, have no experience with hoyas, so I just decided to admire it from afar, but if it's not a lot of trouble, I may think more seriously about it.
hey miss kitty, haven't seen you post in forever seems like!
My hindu rope is hanging next to a north facing window...i've had it for about a year and absolutely no growth seems like. I think the most change I've seen is one of the shoots rotting. Any other major tips than watering? Do you think its not getting enough light? I love it with or without growth, I just hope I'm not killing it slowly. Thank yoU! Susanne
Mine are switched to too much water then not enough if I forget to water.
H. compacta is also the perfect host for mealie bugs... I finally got rid of them by dunking the whole plant top in soapy water with a bit (drop) of salad oil in the bucket...then I sprayed with alcohol and then drenched with Imidocloprid. Not all at once...48 hours inbetween!! LOL Open a leaf and see if you have them....best way. Check for root mealies too...Mine are slow...but they do grow.

hi susanne
yeah.. i've been gone for awhile.. lots of personal issues, etc...
i'm hoping that i'm back in gardening action now, but i may disappear unexpectedly again
thanks for the advice, carol :)
i'm trying to keep it moist, but not drenched... but not letting it dry out completely...
i hope it doesnt grow too slow!!!
lol
Kim
Try keeping it in the coolest area...no direct sun...lots of air circulation...
thanks :)
