Hello,

I just discoverd two salamanders in my pond over the weekend. It is my understanding that the ones in my area only come to water to breed in April and May, and then go back to living on land in damp areas of the woods.

Hi, just a quick note to help. If you are looking for a "salamander" that will stay in your pond year round, you need to get newts and not salamanders. Salamanders spend most of thier adult lives as terrestial creatures and only use water to breed (kinda like toads). Newts, however stay in the water year round and you can normally find them in pet stores. You will have to check the net to find out which ones are indigenous to your area. Hope that helps.

great thank you both!

FYI, salamander larvae are predators. We had some last year that we kept just to watch them morph, then put them back into the pond from whence they came. I could not believe how voracious their appetites were. They even tried to eat each other. If you have little fish, they might get eaten.
