Hi from a new gardener with lots to learn from No. Cal.

Where to start...I'm very interested in learning about planting for where I live, using plants that are native to this part of California. It's very hot and dry (read NO Rain) in the summer--up to 115 degrees. In the winter, it's mostly raining and the temps can get down in the 20s, but not often. Add to that the mostly clay soil, and what we have here is a real growing challenge! I have planted some things that are doing extremely well, like French lavender and yarrow. I have also planted a Fuyu persimmon tree which is set to produce a tree full of fruit this coming season, and this will be only its third winter! I'm concerned about a maytenus tree which was planted at the same time; it does not seem to be doing well. It looks spindly and just plain unhappy. It's getting water and it's been mulched. Should I go ahead and fertilize it, even though it's spring? I come from the East Coast, so gardening out here is a whole new experience.

Hi and welcome! I'm in the woods of eastern KY, so pretty ignorant to the challenges you're facing. But there are lots of subscribers from your neck of the woods that I'm sure can offer you lots of guidance. You may want to try posting your question is the trees and shrubs forum, then I'm sure you'll get some ideas. Happy Gardening!
