3 of 6 new blooms were cleanly sheared off, as though cut with scissors. The plant is very healthy. We had some winds, but they've never snapped off before from the winds...or could a bug be shearing them off? Thanks so much for any help.
Bugs or winds? Blooms sheared off...
I have some in the house under lights that the buds are dropping off. I hope it isn't any kind of bug doing this. My plants are the ones that I got from the Tropical Hibiscus coop that was held here. If we don't get a answer Desert_Dew I will e-mail the person that my liners came from and ask her.
Thank you, 2pugdogs. Hope we can get to the bottom of it.
Have you seen any bugs on yours? Upon inspection of one sheared bloom, I found a ugly little, very long-legged skinny bug. It was about a 1/2" long, almost opaque with tiny spots. Not sure if it was a good or bad guy.
This is what the stem looks like after the bloom is sheared off...
I'm no expert, but in my experience tropical hibiscus just do this sometimes. Mine are all potted and sometimes they drop buds if I move them around. I have a pink one that never drops buds and a yellow one that probably drops 50% of its buds before bloom. As long as the plant looks good, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It is disappointing, but they always grow more flowers.
I just e-mailed her, maybe she will be able to tell us what we need to do to correct this problem. My plants look great other then that. And I am sure it is something that I am doing wrong. As soon as I hear from her I will post it for you and others if they are having the problem.
Linda
My plant looks like yours, and I don't seem to see any bugs on them.
Sylvi74, thanks much. Your input is greatly appreciated. At least it sounds like it's not an uncommon thing. Like you said, it is disappointing, though, lol.
Also, none of the buds have dropped on mine, just the newly opened blooms. It seemed odd to find half the blooms off so suddenly when all the other blooms have hung on until they completely closed up & then dropped off after a few days.
Thanks so much, Linda. I'm looking forward to the input.
