Some *more* new acquisitions.

Like I told one of the gals at the nursery, yesterday..."I only work so I can afford to buy more plants and flowers!" It's true and yesterday was no exception. I just couldn't resist trying this new (for me, anyway) Scented-Leaf Geranium. They have a whole series of them apparently, I chose a light pink with deeper pink eye. The foliage appears finer than other geraniums. The label says they have a whole "potpourri" line and the dried leaves can be used for sachets. Cool. This one is going in a pot on my deck so I can enjoy the nice lemony scent when I sit out there.

I also got an Ivy Geranium in a gorgeous color called Ruby Dream. It is a very deep almost burgandy Red and looks so health and robust. Let's hope I can keep it that way!!! :(

Finally, I couldn't resist a beautiful Blue Clematis that was in full bloom (of course), called Bluebird. So when I get home from the nursery this afternoon, I'll be busy potting and planting. Love it, Love it, Love it!

Here's a neat little tip that I found in the I Can Garden newsletter. Felt it was worth sharing.

Quoting:
I asked last issue that if anyone tried the cucumber peelings to get rid of ants trick ... and got this reply back from Suzanne that very morning ... 'Last summer my fuchsia tree and passion flower plant were on the outside upper deck. It wasn't long before both were totally covered in ants. I did not want to destroy the beautiful blooms so I tried the cucumber peels putting them on the soil lining the inside of the pot. A very short time later I did not see one ant on either plant nor on the deck. What an excellent and environment free way of getting rid of pesky ants.

Hey Donna, sounds like your garden will be the place to visit, after dark, hehehe LOL

And thanks for the ant repelent, hopefully it'll work, and then the ants won't farm the aphids I'm trying to hard to get rid of. The Ladybugs are good, but don't eat as fast as the aphids reproduce!

Linda....(on the hunt for more ladybugs, or some kind of zapper for aphids)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thank you for posting the tip from me as well Donna...I'm pretty sure I'll be wanting to test it this summer. :)

The Bluebird Clematis is gorgeous....it's the one I once said I saw cover a shed in Saskatoon.

Tip for aphids. Our best lily lady here dips a qtip in vodka and wipes off aphids with that. Guess she doesn't have too many aphids though.
G - who WILL NOT try that with her rum

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

lol! Rubbing alcohol would probably have the same effect, I guess - ? Or maybe it would evaporate faster & thus be harder to use.

Winnipeg,, MB(Zone 3a)

I use a spray of rubbing alchol and a bit of water mix , and liquid dish soap.works for me.
and sometimes I just do the alchol with q-tip, but I find that the spray works,
great.

Bryson, QC(Zone 4a)

I use a mixture oF rubbing alchol & water as well. Really,I been fortunate they haven't been a real big problem here..

Your looking for ladybugs those creatures are all over upstairs ceiling and walls..Last yr ,I thought when I saw a number of them they were kinda nice.......but now they're all over- almost thinking a should call pest control...no kinding at least 100 if not more -my place is large so who knows where will be the nxt place they'll pop from.No doubt they're out there multiplying somemore...

Even better, maybe I can catch these souls and get them in a glass jar and send them to you ??

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL Paridise, I can just imagine imagine all those ladybugs crawling everywhere. My last batch seemed to work better. I think it'll be the last batch. I'll be using the rubbing alcohol & water mix with a bit of soap.

On the other hand, i've solved the age old mystery of why good gardeners have green thumbs. I always thought it was because of the correlation to chlorophyl, but personally, I think they were great aphid squishers! ;) LOL

Foggy this morning here, can hear the fog horns in the distance..... a sound I like.

Winnipeg,, MB(Zone 3a)

fog horn,, I would like that sound too,
have a great day,,

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Cloudy and showery here this morning. A nice break after 4-5 days of 27-29 Celsius. Suppose to be 18-20 C today which is the average temperature for this time of year. Whew!

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Sounds like you got yourself some nice new plants Donna. I love the scented geraniums.

Does C. Bluebird have small flowers? We have one called Blue Bird that's an Alpina with small flowers. Just wondered if it's the same one.

Thanks for the tip re: getting rid of ants. We have some tiny little ants in the solarium and on the patio. If they start going on the plants I'll know how to make them go elsewhere.

Sandy

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Are they tiny red ants, Sandy? We had some of those a couple of years ago....they got in the house somehow and made a beeline for any stray piece of dry cat food that happened to be on the floor. We sprinkled some powdery anti-ant stuff into the tiny cracks between the floorboards and around the baseboards, wiped up the excess so the kitties wouldn't get it on their paws, and haven't seen the ants since (fingers crossed...).

Shannon

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

No, they're little black ones. They seem to come back every spring. They're not too bad because there aren't usually too many in the solarium. We just squash them when we see them.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

This Bluebird Clematis, has large blue flowers, Sandy. About 4" in diameter.
