Good plants for spawning Koi?

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Hello Pond Mavens!

I am a newbie Koi owner and they seem to be doing the "we're ready to spawn but don't have any plants to lay eggs in you stupid woman" dance! Can you recommend a good plant to sink into the tub for them? Thanks for your help!

Stick a regular old cotton mop head in the pond. Then you can take your time selecting plants. Your fish will probably eat your fry though.

Oh thanks! I figured they will eat them, specially if I don't put something in there to collect the eggs then move the eggs somewhere safe. Mop head, cool! Thanks again!!!!

Last year our koi (we've only got 3 - one male, one female and one?) laid a 'zillion' eggs in the roots of the water hyacinths, on rocks, on lilies - basically anything that wasn't moving (see photo). Of couse the koi and comets then had a feast over the next 24 hours so it was difficult to find any one day later! They're cannibals!

About how big are the eggs? (so I know what to look for!) We also have a large pond in my office building....I might take my aquarium net over and see if I can bag any eggs from there. Ssshhhhh....don't tell!

The eggs are about 1/8" or so in diameter. Maybe a bit smaller.
