Canine Genome Project

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

We took three of our kids to the local Whippet club's racing practice this afternoon, and after they were finished running we were asked if we would contribute to the Canine Genome Project. A vet was invited in by the Whippet club, and for those that were willing, he took blood samples. They extract DNA from the blood that they use for part of their canine cancer research projects and other canine genetic studies. The samples will be part of a larger collection and available to other researchers. The DNA information is also accessible to the owners if it is ever needed for identification or for determining genetic predisposition. I thought it was really exciting to be able to be part of a project like this. We were told that they would be attending a large number of dog shows and events in order to collect as many samples as possible. If you have a purebred dog check out dog events in your area to see if there will be anyone there collecting samples. This is something that can benefit us and our dogs health in the future.
The 'kids' had a good time running, and didn't mind the quick blood draw afterward. I think they were too tired to care much at that point!!
