Does anyone know of a Canadian mail order company that sells horseradish? I've found it in some American catalogs but unfortunately they can't send the rhizomes across the border.
Horseradish
Hi, Spectrum! Are you new to DG? If so, welcome! Where are you located?
Lindenberg's in Brandon, MB sells horseradish. It's not in their on-line catalogue, which is still in development, but if you have their paper one, it's on p. 8. Here's what it says:
"This perennial root thrives with little or no care, producing pungent, white-flesh horseradish. The root is used for relish, seasoning, etc. Can be left undisturbed for years. Plant in a moist but well-drained, sunny spot. Top size selected stock. 4013 Pkg. of 2 Horseradish $5.19"
Here's the link to their website, which you can use to order the catalogue (free in Canada), and it also has their mailing address, phone and e-mail if you want to send an order. Shipping is $4.00 for orders under $35, seems to be free if over - I've never ordered from them yet. They have a lot of stuff in their catalogue - seeds, plants, gardening accessories, books, etc. No colour pics tho', except for on the cover.

Here also is the link to their rating in the Garden Watchdog.

Good luck! If you want any other info from their catalogue, let me know - I can look it up for you.

Too bad my folks don't have the last house they were in, the horseradish took over the garden.
LOLOL......at our old house, in North Battleford, the back alley was filled with it.
Maybe it still is...if Spectrum lives near there, he or she could potentially sneak over there under of cover of darkness and borrow some....if they were inclined to that sort of thing...lol
LOLOL.........in the Battlefords I don't think Spectrum would have to look very hard! Ditches outside of town were also filled with it.
I'm repeating Shannon........where do you live Spectrum?

Thanks for the information. To answer your question, yes, I am somewhat new and I live in the Canadian prairies. Not near enough to North Battleford to check the ditches though :)
Welcome to Dave's and the Canadian chatting/trading forum Spectrum! Ü
I'm a transplanted prairie person ... the sky down here is just not the same. Smaller, and often cloudy. It was good to be back west for a visit last week. Anyway, welcome again, and good luck with the horseradish search!

You would have loved the past two days here Shannon...it was +19 two days ago and yesterday and today aren't too shaby either (tho cooler) and the skies are a gorgeous shade of blue! Maybe us prairie peeps should just take lots of sky pictures (we can spare that very easily ;). Now if we could only have the shopping/plant choices the rest of the country has!
Well, I've got the catalog and am going to order the horseradish. Does anyone have any tips for keeping it from taking over everything once I plant it? Keep in mind that I'm in zone 2b.
Horse radish, comfrey & lovage behave the same IMO. I would line your planting area with galvanized tin and plant in there. If you don't want to do that (rusts out anyway) you can keep all 3 under control with a sharp spade. Prune the roots whenever it gets too large. With lovage, chop it back when it gets too tall. Don't let the lovage go to seed or you'll be chasing it around the garden forever.
You wouldn't think I'm really an iris/lily person would you.
