transplanting ferns, when?

Renton, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi all! I live in the Pacific Northwest and there are many ferns that grow wild here. I would like to "liberate" some of them into my yard for a particularly shady spot. Would now be a good time? The fruit trees are blooming and we are well past danger of frost.

Thank you for your help!

Now is a good time. the ferns are probably just starting their fiddlehead stage (looks like a wound up spring) and that is a perfect time to transplant them.

I have moved ferns at all times of year except winter. Often I have been very careless about replanting. Years ago I dug ferns in the Adirondacks, chopped off the foliage, took the roots back to PA in a plastic garbage bag (several of them). Anything and everything works. We have hundreds of ferns at this point and I love them. When I have a spot that bothers me I dig a few ferns, fill in the spot, and the problem is solved.
