Wondering if anyone grows the brug Snowbank?
and if you do, can you please post a picture,
Thanks
Wilma
Brugs
Heatherbelle's got one, that should be blooming soon. Mine aren't doing well, they seem to be really finicky about where they are etc.
Thanks echoes,
Linda
hope she post a picture when it blooms.
Wilma
Yes, I have three long buds which should be open in a few days - at the moment they look like they are very yellow. I took my brugs out of the greenhouse today as the weather was so nice ( and then lugged them all back inside). I will take some pictures tomorrow and then more when they open.
Heather
Thanks Heather
will be great to see pictures of the ones you grow,,
Wilma
Thanks Heatherbell, it is a beauty, Can you post another picture when the blooms open? Please,
I have just received a snowbank cutting from a garden friend ( what a wonderful surprise for me) and was wondering how mine would look when it comes into bloom sometime.
also received another cutting called Buttercream Butterfly,
Have you ever heard of it.??
Here is a picture of my new plant.. Snowbank
I will definitely post a picture when it blooms. it shouldn't be too long if the weather stays nice. Your leaves are much healthier looking than mine - the poor wee soul has been inside too long ! I haven't heard of Buttercream Butterfly - maybe Jeanne or Liz know something about it.
Heather
Lovely photos. You are going to have some beauties there, Heather. Love the variegated foliage of your Snowbank Brugs, Wilma and Heather.
Thanks Heather & Donna
someday it will bloom..
I just love it..
Lucky ladies........both your Snowbanks look very, very happy! Ü
Well maybe it is butterfly, leaves looks so different
This friend started them from seed, that he bought off e-bay.
Heather! so nice to see blooms, I'll be by some day soon to see them real live and in person.
Finally, my snowbanks are showing some growth and are looking healthier. I can' only hope.
Heather, which var. brug did you have in your dinning room window? Wasn't that Snowbank? Do you have pictures of that one too?
Linda, the one in my dining room window was Peaches & Cream. It has one solitary blossom on it just now and I moved it out on to the porch at the front of the house. It is much larger than the Snowbank.
My two cents dillpickle, no one gets a named variety from seed. They don't come true from seed. The only way that you'll get a clone is if you take a cutting or tissue culture.
Oh well Liz
don't matter to me, which one it is as it is one I do not have,
just so lucky that this person gave it to me,,
as long as it flowers one day and I can smell the flowers..

Linda, I posted a photo of my Peaches & Cream on February 17, when I showed pictures of my Japanese Gardens. I have a cutting if you want one - by the way, if you are out and about on Saturday, drop by, as I will be home all day (Ian is working).
Heather
Thanks Heatherbelle
so lovely
I think I can smell it all the way out here,
thanks for sharing..
We all enjoyed the experience, Heather. Thanks. :Donna

I've been busy most of the day. I've cleared out probably 2/3 of the brugs on the deck, and got them staked out side. I've re-arranged the deck, looks kinda empty now. I've taken some of the siding down so there's air moving and it's not 35*C out there! The fountain broke, and I fixed that. There's still about another 2 days of work needed out there, but I wil do it over 3-4 days.
While I was in amonst the brugs, I noticed I have multiple buds on my Snowbank; Valley Sunshine; P&C, Rosabelle, something misnamed, and Whiskers is loaded with blossoms, and CG is between flushes, but Rosamond has 5 out at once. That's as many as she had all last year.
I'm hoping I can attach her in this post
Looking really pretty Linda! Ü Sounds like you had a really productive day........wish I could say the same! :( I don't like working outside when snow is falling (even if it was a dusting).
Pam, pack yer bags girl and head west!
Linda, it looks like you are heading for a great brug blooming summer !
Lovely pictures Heather and Linda. That's a gorgeous pink one Linda. It sounds like you're going to be surrounded by blossoms with 6 plants about to bloom.
I've moved all mine outside now as well. I need to put some in larger pots. I'm afraid they'll blow over if we get a real windy day. I've tied a few up but many are on the patio so I can't drive stakes in beside those. I have my usual two blooming and Tropical Sunset has it's first bud about to open so I can hardly wait to see what that one will be like. Too bad I dropped my camera or I'd be able to share some pictures. :-(
Sandy
Sandy, oh no! you dropped your camera? that's gonna hurt.
Heather we'll have to visit each other when all are blooming, and anytime in between as well.
Linda
Nice pic, Linda. I'm glad I got to see your deck so I can have a good mental picture of what you've done. It must be nice & warm in there these days, eh?
Wow, sounds like you and your Brugs are going gang-busters, Linda. I am trying to picture your deck without all the plants. It must look really different. Now that you have some of your enclosure down and it's not 35C in there, it will be nice for you and Cheryl to sit out there and enjoy looking at the Hummers and your lovely back yard. Say Hi to Cheryl for me. :Donna
Linda
Thanks for posting your brug
looks very lovely, and must smell great too.
sounds like you have a lovely place to sit and enjoy your back yard,
thanks for sharing..

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering what to do with my brand-new (since the RU) brugs, now that the weather's getting warmer. Well, that's a relative term....our days are around 15-18 and our nights around 7.
Should they go outside for the summer? If so, should they stay in pots on the patio, or be "planted" in their pots in the ground...or maybe even straight in the ground....or just not put outside at all? I saw a thread in the brugs forum, with a photo of brugs in the ground in the summer, in zone 4a...surely that's just temporary-?
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/481743/
I've put mine in my portable greenhouse outside, but the lower leaves are going yellow and dropping off and I'm thinking I'd better bring them back into the house until I know a bit more. I feel like I've adopted a new baby and I have no idea how to make it happy! Any recommendations from more experienced brug-tenders?
Shannon
Hi Shannon, if you're not going to get anymore frost... you can leave them outside. I leave mine in pots all year round, but if I had the garden room, I'd plant them, pot and all in the dirt. That will give them better stability when there's a wind. If you plant them in the pot in the ground, have some holes in the pot, so that the roots can grow out of hte pot. Holes on the sides of the pot, about 1-2" big. When you dig them up in the fall, (because in your zone they won't last in the ground) you will most likely have to cut back the branches, leaving about 6 leaf nodes above each Y in the branches. You can (should) also trim the roots that are growing out of the potm through the holes I mentioned above. This will keep your brug from getting too big, and needing re potting every spring or more often. A good rule of thumb, is cut back the root ball the same percentage as you cut back the branches. That's what I've been told.
These plants also like a lot of feeding. I feed mine 2-3x weekly, 20-20-20, and water them everyday, so long as they are not sitting water. They don't like having constantly wet feet or else they will get root rot.
Most of hte brugs I know, but not all... like some sun, but not hot sun, and some shade. Mine face south, but get afternoon shade from other trees, and they seem to thrive with that.
In a nut shell, that's what I know about brugs. This should at least get you and your new baby well on the road to comfort.
How's the new job going? When are ya coming back out west?
Linda
Now that the drama is over, have an RU Brug story. VW broke down in the mountains between Hope and Princeton. I hitched into Princeton to get a tow truck and to call kiddos in Kelowna to say I wouldn't be there that night.
Kiddo insisted on coming to Princeton to pick me up so left VW -and Wilmas brugs - on side of the road overnight. Brugs froze. Were looking terribly sad the next day.
Am happy to say that Wilma cut them back and they are all growing again from the roots.
Inanda - where the NZ flax is rooting nicely, no top growth yet -Thank you Heatherbelle - and iris have finally started.
Ginny, that's good news that you made it back, after a fashion.....and so good to hear that the plants are surviving as well.
Quite the adventure, Ginny. Glad to hear everything worked out ok. Where is the VW now? What are the plans for it?
My Flax is doing well, too. As are all of the plants I brought from Victoria. Including, whew, the thrice dug up Camellia. :D
Quite a story, Ginny! I'm glad the hitchhiking worked out ok. Not that you had much choice at that point, of course. Has the VW been fixed now?
Linda, thanks for the excellent brug advice. I'll set them up outside this weekend, with holes in the pots, and I'll keep this thread handy throughout the summer and fall. It's a relief to know they can be cut back for bringing back inside. So, the lower leaves turning yellow is nothing in particular to worry about, you think?
The new job's going pretty well; thanks for asking. Even though I've learned about some of the inevitable drawbacks, of the sort that come with any job, I'm still feeling good about the whole place overall. That hasn't been the case with any of my other jobs in recent memory, so things are looking up.
They're saying that we'll be doing an inspection trip in the fall, but still no idea where. There are a whole cluster of museums on the island, so that would be a natural choice as far as I'm concerned!
Shannon
Shannon, the yellow leaves, is they are on the bottom, just pull them off. I'm always pickingup leaves that have turned yellow and dropped off. I think it's a normal part of the cycle. Other things that may be making them unhappy... keep a look out for aphids. I have come to the conclusion every aphid in Victoria has found my brugs. Last year I battled spider mites, this year it's aphids. Oh well, it keeps me busy
