both my Maya are pheww...

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Well the larger of the green cuttings has "mooed". Well...rot, stink etc. I have not had alot of luck with any brugs from green cuttings. However, the larger Maya cutting was about the same size as some others I have been successful with - so for me. This was very difficult (impossible) for ME to root from cuttings that show no white buddies when starting. :0
Thanks for the opportunity to try.

If any of you who know how to root these would like to do an experiement where you send out already rooted cuttings to look for different vari -let me know.

This is how I start green cuttings. One on right(3) is P & Cream or Maya.

Hibiscus - you have it going!!! Good for you.

Charlotteda - don't feel bad or give up on trying, everyone has had cuttings that didn't make it. I'm sure even the most experienced will tell you so.

Charlotteda there will be more cuttings really soon. Hang in there. We all lose cuttings from time to time.

As a side note, Gloria could start a rock and get it to grow and multiply.... She's awsome with starting cuttings. :)

Now Kristi, I lose one now and then. Thank you tho' .

I wonder if the water source influence some peoples ease of rooting cuttings in water?
Gloria - city or well?

I've got hard lake Michigan water but it's worked pretty well so far... especially if I change it as I should. Except since starting brugs, I've been running air into it and just keep adding water.

Well water, some calcium/lime. Not hard, as we do not have a watersoftener. They say if using city water, to draw and let sit 24 hours, so salts and chlorine settles to bottom.

Sounds as if you have it figured out. Air/bubbler would be great, never tried that.

My cuttings were green (I am NOT complaining..now !) but I havent had good luck with rooting anything other than mature cuttings. Especially in water, they seem to rot but even in soil if the cutting is not very big in diameter. No problem, I'll get one later from some of you experts :)

Just a note ,
I case ya'll forgot, these maya cuttings were from young spring growth not the semi hard late fall cuttings we normally get.
THERE IS
A big difference !
Some of the stem base cuttings were thicker but had less nodes.
Since no two cuttings are the same , I tried to send one of each type.

My pencil cutting seemed to be doing well but then shriveled and died.
The thicker cutting I layed into seed starter and tented.
She is in a clear container & I can see roots forming and a couple little leaves starting to come off the bottom side of the 'log'.
Maybe this one will make it.

Good Luck. Yes, one of my cuttings was bigger than the other and it did last longer before kicking the bucket :)

Intestesting information on the water type. I hadn't thought of it before. We do have hard water and use a water softener. BAD for plants, I'm sure. I just tossed the water I had my survivor in and replaced it with filtered water. Hopefully that will do the trick. You all are just a wealth of good information!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I've just learned about the water type we have here in Spokane. I was doing research on Gardenias, since I'm trying them this year. I learned they don't like alkaline water and are acid loving plants. Well - I was told our water supply is 7.9 - just slightly alkaline. I can add a couple teaspoons of vinegar to a gallon of water to make it 7.0 - neutral. I'm using that water for my gardenias as I hear they are very picky and many people lose them. I am also using lime-free soil, with peat for them, and giving them an occasional dose of wet coffee grounds to get acid in the soil.

As for Brugs, they, for the most part haven't had a problem with my tap water. I think I got about 75% of them to root.
