I have killed my last Snowbank. It makes number 3 or 4. I know some growers don't have any problems with it ---please don't tell me yours is in perfect condition and ten feet tall. It will make me feel soooooooo bad. LOL Whatever I do in growing brugs--Snowbanks is too finicky for my brug growing abilities. I have no problems with Maya. Plant it outside and it comes back. Snowbank-I can't even get it growing in greenhouse.
Snowbank- I have murdered my last one
I am sorry Bward :( (I am new to brugs so wouldn't know a Snowbank from a Maya but still it's very sad)
I'll show you a picture of my Maya and Snowbank, side by side tomorrow, you wont feel so bad.
My Maya is going great guns. Snowbank is something else. Has 3 small leaves at the top. Leaves keep getting ugly brown on sides.
Gosh, it's still hanging in there. I guess it's getting enough from Mom to keep going. What has it been? Two years that you've had that sport?
This will be the second year,I think I will keep it in a pot.
Opps,sorry Barb,did not mean a Hyjack here...
Barb, Snowbank is about the only Brug I could not keep alive.
I have Maya and suaveolens variegata and have never had a problem with them.
I think Snowbank is too finicky for up here too. I won't waste time trying to keep another one alive.
Barb -- I don't like mine at all. Defintely will not give it GH space this winter. Its in the ground, so its do or die... I've had it over a year, and its only grown a few inches and never "y'd". You're not alone...
Well this either knocks my hat in the creek or gives me a challenge. I just got a Snowbank in from Wayside yesterday. If it's that touchy, I guess I should go get it out of the greenhouse which gets down to mid 40's at night. Is it the cold that kills them? Peaches and Cream has been out there over a week and has settled in nicely.
8ftbed, Yes, it is the cold. I live in Mississippi and even in my greenhouse. It barely made it but was alive. I put it outside in March along with the other brugs. Our night temperatures were in 50's. It immediately started to show stress and within two weeks the main stem was mushy. After I killed the second one,I talked to Terra Nova about my growing problems ( I grow over 75 varieties at any given time) and they told me it definitely likes a warm greenhouse.
I had mine on my warm sunporch and it started showing stress. I misted the leaves to no avail, moved it to a cooler room, put it under lights and it still continued to go downhill.
I think I moved that plant in every room in the house trying to get the perfect spot for it.
Never did find the perfect spot and it finally kicked the bucket.
I overwintered mine in a cool Greenhouse. The temperature range lies between 5 and 8°C. She did very well and is already growing. Peaches 'n Cream gives me a headache.
That doesn't give me much hope for successfully growing the Snowbank I ordered from Wayside and should receive next week. Maybe Snowbank needs less sunlight than all green Brugs. Many variegated plants need some protection from the sun which could burn the white part of the leaves. I ordered three. I think I'll experiment with different amounts of sunlight.
Barb,
'Snowbank' probably prefers a greenhouse situation.
So, I shouldn't tell you mine had a 4'canopy and hundreds of blooms last fall before I cut it back. .. lol
But I couldn't get down the pathway any more, so no choice.
Good to see you posting here again (o:
Happy to know you are well again (o:
Alice
I have not had a problem with Snowbanks either. It could be that I kept it in a warm greenhouse over the winter, but, I think the real reason is that I got my plant from Alice!

Doesn't it just stink Barb? Mine over wintered without problem in a cool 45F garage. It's outside now and is putting on leaves. I'm NOT a fan of this plant. I don't think Terra Nova should have introduced it so quickly as the newest and best.
Barb don't feel bad I have killed 2 Maya and 2 Snowbanks too. Am on the 3rd and last of both. Snowbank from Kay and my backup Maya which is also the first time I have been able to root one. My Maya doesn't come back from the ground and Snowbanks didn't like it in a warm GH or inside the house. Maybe they were just to small. The one I got from Kay last summer has some size to it and over wintered very well this year.
My snowbank just turned belly up too. Sad because it grew very well outside last summer and then I dug it up, potted it and it still did very well. It had some nice new leaves and looked like it wanted to have a growth spurt.. and then .....boom... the leaves wilted and within just a short time, the entire shaft (trunk) shriveled and died.....
I am not even going to bother messing with another Snowbank,, although the leaves are sooo pretty...not worth the heartache... feels like I lost a child almost....
*big sigh*

Barb, I can relate.
I got 2 snowbanks at thelocal nursery the came time as another DG member (Heatherbelle) that lives a few blocks away from me. Here's fills her dining room window and is ready to bloom, mine are maybe 1.5' tall, one is starting to get bigger leaves up top, the other, well, seems we just don't get along.

Slap me with BEGINNERS LUCK! I bought Snowbank from ebay, it arrived looking grim..finally the leaves unwithered and flattened out...she was about 2' tall when I planted her out in filtered shade. She has taken off like a scalded cat - well, I DO embellish a bit but she IS healthy! I am glad I wasn't terrified of her or I would have killed her for sure...but...the fat lady hasn't sung the anthem yet...there is still time to do her in if I hurry!!!
Sorry to make light of your loss, Barb - it isn't funny, I know. It is tragic!!! There are plenty I have grown and killed! Jerodsmom sent me Miners Claim...it grewnicely into a small plant...had about a foot of new growth on it when some friend's dogs playing near it snapped the new growth off. It was all over but the tears, then. I potted it up and took it into ICU but it has never recovered.
Sometimes I think that all of the plants we nurture tenderly have their own inner clock and if we are lucky, we get it right...Not and they go south.
:(
Aw shoot !
I just found out that I murdered my prize Snowbank ;'(
She was coming out of dormancy really well then all of a sudden she just gave up the ghost .
Gotta find another one. In my shady garden she was the main highlight and a real beaut .
Whhaaaaahhhhhhhh ! *sobs*
Sorry about your Snowbank, Scooterbug!
Thanks, I missed your post while looking for a pic of my SB
I have better pics somewhere but since my pc messed up last winter I could have lost them.

For some reason, the leaves are very curved on my Snowbank right now, which is probably hiding the white edges. I don't think I have Spider Mites, and I'm not sure why the leaves are curling, but it could be a reaction to the cold winter we had because the new leaves aren't curling. I'll treat for mites just in case.
Scoot, when mine gets going I'll get you a start if you don't have one by then.
I'll at least get two chances because at that price, you better believe Wayside will replace it if it doesn't make it!
I agree that Snowbank it is not a very healthy plant. I will not give it another chance. I still like Maya. Peaches and Cream is not as good a grower for me and not consistently healthy. I don't know if I ever asked this but was Snowbank a sport or did it originate form a cross?
Barb I believe it was from a Maya which was converted into a tetraploid. It is a patented Brug.
Mine bloomed with a dozen blooms the first fall, but it was just too slow growing for me and the leaves burned too easily, so it took a trip to a new home. I don't even remember who took it. I just knew I would never have much interest in it because of the way it grew for me.
