canadian gardening beef!!!!
Shawn, I agree with you the a gardening mag should have gardening ads. The only down to this in a gardening mag is that the income is mostly from the ads, and maybe they don't have enough gardening ads to make it profitable, so they've had to look else where. But if they are looking else where, why not make it even.
It's like when I was looking for a new truck, and the salesman said as we were doing the test drive, "isn't this a nice colour of the seats?" I gave him a cold look and asked him what the towing limit was, he couldn't answer me. I've had car service people tell me to bring in my husband so they could talk to them. When informed of no husband, they suggested a male friend! I lodged a complaint and won't deal with that make of vehicle anymore.
I vote for equality!
Linda
I agree with you Shawn. Here's a different twist. I've been looking at gardening magazine ads hoping to find even one that sells a line of garden tools I once saw at a White Rose store that is specifically sized to fit the "lady gardener". Guess what? Not one can I find, zip, nada, nothing. The ones I have are just about worn out now.
Boy can I ever relate to the issue of equality Linda! I too have had problems dealing with auto service technicians trying to tell me I need a new something or other but when I calmly explain to them how to fix it, usually in an audible voice in the middle of their morning crowd of service customers, they tend to back down and never try to pull that stunt again. LOL if I never dealt with a particular make of vehicle anymore after experiencing those things I'd be just about out of options by now except for maybe Lada or something. --Ginny
Sounds like a legitimate "beef" to me, Shawn. I have to admit, I had never noticed it before, but then again, generally, I don't buy garden magazines. I can't imagine what these publications are thinking though. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize all of the male gardening gurus we have out there. I hope your contact with the one that your were refering to, Shawn, smartens them up. A few more complaints like that and then maybe they'll give us the the gender equality that is so obviously lacking.
thanks for the replys i was hoping someone would agree with me,shawn
I so agree with you, I didn't renew my subscription this year. Maybe not for quite the same reason, but don't think it worth it anymore.
The car thing drives me crazy. My DD had a neon. Day after she bought it I took it to get a hitch. Was told 'No towing' it is a unibody. Hmm.... so now I'll always ask that, though am sure I'll never get another 'new' car.

It's all very frustrating. I'm glad you mentioned this, Shawn - like Donna, it had never occurred to me, but you're absolutely right. And Linda and Ginny, rrrrrrrrrrr.....on your behalf...... unbelievable.
Shawn, Gardening Life (the other major Canadian gardening mag) is just as bad for the type of ads, but there are a couple of American ones I like, if you wanted to go that route: Horticulture, and Taunton's Fine Gardening. The vast majority of their ads are for garden stuff. I guess with a bigger market, they can afford to be more selective with their advertising instead of just going for the so-called "feminine" market share - ? Anyway, I've just sent away for subscriptions to both, so will let you know how they are in the long term. Couldn't hack the newsstand prices anymore.
What other gardening mags do you all like?
Shannon
Fine Gardening and The Gardener for the Prairies are my two favourites. Fine Gardening also has a good website. Just wish the Gardener came out more than four times a year. I pick up the odd interesting one from the stands too.
fine gardening is awsome i never miss a copy ,i found ontario gardener is good too thats about it for me ,shawn
