In the Yukon, it was so much more fun to go search mining records, see when an area was to be opened. Then we would set off to be there at midnight, with our torches and walk the claim and stake it.(in the dark). Then the next AM to be first in line at the Recorder, to do the paperwork.
Best of all, to go back by daylight with small grandchild to see what plants/wild flowers etc you could find on your claim.
Of course, kiddo would be thinking of the possible gold, Mum hoping to find exciting wildflowers. Grandchild thinking about special picnic yummies.
