Can anyone tell me what is chewing on my plant? Sorry, I couldn't get the picture lighter. Jeanette
What is eating my plant?
It makes me think it's a tear 'cause of the way that little lobe near the stem looks.
Jeanette, I don't know what it is, and it could be a tear, as Scoot said; however, we have been invaded by Tent Cats - ugh!!! They were pretty cute newborns, but then turned vicious and are every place. I dusted with Sevin and, so far, don't have them on the brugs. Good luck, Jeanette, I hope you are lucky and it's not bugs or cats!!!
I don't know how long. Up close it looks chewed. and then when you look through the rest of the leaf it has small 3/8 inch cuts? One other leaf on it has the same chewed but not as bad. The plants are seedlings and never out of my house, and all plants I have I started from seed. So, if it's cats, it would have had to be in the soil, or on something else like boxes, bags of fertilizer. Eggs on the outside? Is that possible?
btw, thanks for lightening it up. my program seems to have everything but that.
I know what the leaves are like when you tear them accidentally moving them or something. This isn't that. I've done that and always to the nicest looking plant. LOL.
Sherry, I feel so bad for you having the tents. I remember when I was a child in Idaho and they were so bad that you could look down the road and it would be moving. The cars actually slid in them. There was not a leaf left on a tree. You had to stay away from any plants, fences etc. Even then you would find them crawling on you. How gross.
Jeanette
jnette, get Irfan View 3.85
http://www.irfanview.com/
it's free and you can do alot of things with the program.
what is a tent cat?
Karrie, I'm living and thinking in purely city terms so, picturing cats of the feline variety, I looked it up myself.
I think that it's a "tent caterpillar. "
See http://www.tent-caterpillar.com/
I cannot imagine a slew of them, yuckky, but impressive that they 've organized and have their own website. LOL
You've seen them Karrie. In the spring usually they make big tents of webs in the leaf trees and defoliate big branches. Jeanette
Scoot, Good recemindation on the program. I d/l it to see what it was. I like it.

My neighbor came over after i posted and says I do not have Tent Cats. She doesn't know the name of the cats we have but they resemble Tents, and we have them every place. I have never seen them before. One of, possibly the only advantage of a broken ankle, is having the time, forced upon me, to observe my plants and the pests more closely. I just could not believe my eyes when these things started hatching, they are every place. Merle, the neighbor, says Sevin powder takes care of them and I've dusted everything. They look very similar to Forest Tents and I have not found another photo of a cat that resembles them. Certainly not the two cats attached, ya think??!!
ROFL , What a shot !
Robin , I like the shortcut for IV on the desktop cause you can drag & drop any photo the is also on the desktop.
Slugs?
BTW...after dosing all my Brugs and other eaten trees with Imidocloprid everything is leafing out perfectly...no slugs, no grubs, no chinese beetles, no caterpillers (ars?)...
LOL Sherry. What a picture.
Yes Scoot, it is a good site. Thanks, Jeanette
Thanks, they are really wicked and evil tom cats, they only let me take a dozen photos ! I liked this one with El Rici Tici Ricardo's tail wrapped around Red Parker...

Sherry, I love the names and the pic (LOL)....and I have to say that I like the evil tom cats much more than the evil tent cats! Sorry you guys have to battle with those pesty icky buggers!
Thanks, Jackie!! I have three toms and one Golden that make every step I make each day in the garden. Silly boys think I do all this for them, lol! If any of you have trouble with your cats using your garden for a litter box, I've found something that is working for me. I make a small section for the cats, I use potting soil, with no cypress on it and they've been using it, instead of my brugs. Please cross your fingers for me because they killed a couple of brugs last year, before I realized what was causing the damage. If anyone has a better idea, short of taking them to the Safeway parking lot and giving them away, please advise. Of course I won't give them away because I'd probably have to pay to get someone to take them, lol!!
Sherry, that picture is adorable.
