How to plant an eleven foot Banana

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I have an eleven foot Banana tree from last year. It took four of us to lift it onto a trailer for winter storage. Now it's time to plant it outside. Should I try to plant it a little deeper this year? I know I'm going to have to put some good sturdy stakes around it until it starts growing a good root system.

I've always kept the same soil line as in years before with the really big ones we did at mothers.. her 16' catheaderal ceilings uner the skylights kept the big ones alive and growing sometimes messy flowering inside.. and the smaller bagged 10' ers in the garage all kept the same depth when replanted.. it's not like tomatoes that will root further from the sides of the stems/stalks.. I don't believe...Gordon

Thanks, Gordon. Now to find enough hands to lift it in the hole. LOL

I agree with Gordon..... Have you had any pups yet?

Hap, it has one very small one on it now. That's the only one so far. Unlike the Chinese yellow Banana that stays full of pups. LOL

Ada you be careful. You sure don't need to hurt yourself.

LOL You're right, Donna.

what kind is it? If Musa Basjoo, it is hardy to zone 5 and you should be able to leave outside during winter w/ mulch. Something that big should be pretty sturdy. Colder area gardeners have a myriad of tricks for protecting their nanas. I do nothing 'cause my winters are mild. na na na na na na

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I have no idea what kind it is or who I purchased it from last year. You should be ashamed for rubbing it in 'cause you have mild winters. LOL

bowing head in shame....

Ada, I had to laugh a bit reading about your TALL Banana tree.. I'm sure that is difficult to move around. I wasn't laughing at you but myself.
I bought a Musa Basjoo two years ago and had it in a container. I tried the first year to figure out where to plant it. Well I then spent last year figuring out where to plant it. LOL~ just lazy I guess. Mine was only 5' tall with 4 pups.

I spent a couple hours last week dividing it and wishing I had a Machete. The large kitchen knife I had to use just didn't cut the mustard!!!! If the neighbors heard me chopping and whacking the poor thing they most likely thought I lost it once again...LOL Man oh Man what a chore that is. I guess looking back at it I was lucky not to have a meat cleaver. I surely would have look dangerous or deranged by the time I was done.
Good luck with your transplanting.

LOL Thanks, KIn. I have a machete and a big meat clever. Mine only has the one small pupp. This has been the tallest Banana tree I've had thus far and was amazed it grew so tall in a few months.

I planted my 13 footer in the ground one year

I'll help ya pick it back up....
just make sure you're not under it

Be careful Ada! That sure is one tall Nana.
It's only raining here today no extreme weather. Lucky me! Hope your plants make it through the cold snap your having.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks CC. I'll be sure to stay outta the way. LOL

Thanks, Kin. I hope me and the plants make it thru the cold snap. I've moved so many plants, I feel like Granny grunt. LOL I used cattle panels to make a tunnel to put some plants in but the high winds wouldn't leave the plastic cover on. I'd put it on and the winds would take it off. I even sat fifteen gallon pots on the edges of the plastic and the winds still tore it off. I could have held onto the plastic and played Mary Poppins and sailed thru the air. LOL

Hi Granny Grunt!
I bet your gonna sleep well after all that work. Such a good idea with the cattle panels. Wish the wind would have given you a break, sounds frustrating. Well, I'm wishing you the best of luck tonight and glad you remained earth bound. No tell where Ada Poppins would have been a droppin with that kinda wind. LOL

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

LOL You're right, Kin. Tomorrow night is our freeze night. I hope they're wrong. With all these aches and pains, Granny Grunt may not sleep a wink. LOL
