When to cut the starts?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

On my supernova, the mother plant seems stunted, and the start is not only thriving, but is taller than the mom.

They are both a little over a foot tall, the mother stopped growing, the start caught up.

What to do? Please help me do this, and I mean step by step. I'm not good at this, and I don't want too hurt either.

Do I pull it all out of the pot? Then how do I slice it? Then what do I do for the newbie - water or dirt?

HELP!

If the mother is in good soil and isn't over watered and dying, I'd leave her alone until you put her outside and see what happens. She might surprise you. Since you have a back up plant, I wouldn't worry about it. When you are ready to take cuttings from a plant, don't worry about how you "slice" them. I cut mine on an angle or straight. Doesn't seem to matter. Some, I even just snap off. How you root it would depend on what works best for you.

Here is a pic of the Super Nova that has the shoot. The shoot is on the left. The "mother" plant isn't growing - except the leaves seem longer than the height of the whole plant. (How tall does this particular one get, anyways)?????

I'm wondering if I should pull this out of the pot and examine what is going on underneath the soil before doing anything.
