I come across this and thought some of you might enjoy knowing how to to make your own nectar...enjoy :o)
Boil 4 parts water.
Mix 1 part ordinary white granulated sugar.
Stir and allow the mixture to cool.
When the nectar is room temperature, fill your clean hummingbird feeder.
You can make your own oriole nectar by following this recipe:
Boil 6 parts water.
Mix 1 part ordinary white granulated sugar.
Stir and allow the mixture to cool.
When the nectar is room temperature, fill your clean oriole feeder.
Tips:
Never use red dyes or food coloring, as they are not healthy for hummingbirds or orioles.
Never use honey when making your nectar mix. Honey attracts bees and can grow black fungus that will cause a fatal liver and tongue disease in hummingbirds.
Replace the nectar once every three to four days and clean the feeder thoroughly.
Unused nectar can be refrigerated for up to two weeks.

Thanks red_princess_71. :D
Thanks! I was scratching my head just this evening, trying to remember the correct ratio! Yes, I know I'm late filling my feeders, but I bet I'll still get some customers!
LOL
I use superfine sugar, and don't have to boil it... is there any reason why this wouldn't be a good idea? My hummers seemed to love it last year.
None at all.
You can make your own superfine sugar by running regular sugar through your food processor with the blade!!

Good tip! Thanks!!!
I don't boil either. My hummers can go thru a half gallon in one day, no time to boil. Will it hurt to use the hummer mix for the Orioles? They go to the hummer feeders sometimes anyway.
