OT: Ocean Vacation ideas

Wichita, KS

Family wants to take a trip to see the ocean. Can you suggest some things for us to look into? We know we want to see the ocean and the price has to be low to reasonable! LOL (getting roof on house and had to dip into the vacation fund). Also don't want anything too touristry, if that makes sense-family oriented.

One of the places we are looking into is Quintana Beach close to Freeport.
A friend was telling us that it defeats the purpose to go to see the ocean if it is murky from the oil. Anyone know if it is murky there?
Any other suggestions?

BTW - there we will be 4-6 of us.

Thank you for your ideas,

Well, if you don't want to go somewhere too touristy and don't mind hiking, consider going to the Redwoods. I went there and took the coastal trail hike (about a mile) and the only people we had to share the beach with were the park rangers that drove by about every 1/2 hour. There were also elk there checking us our and a california sea lion swam up to the shore and barked at us a few times. It was great!

Nut4Spuds/KS,
I'm thinking you are talking about going to the Ocean in Texas since you posted in the Texas Gardening Forum. I don't know anything about Quintana Beach but there are several members who live in southern Texas so someone should come along and help you. For an inexpensive coastal area of Texas I like Crystal Beach near Galveston. I love South Padre but it isn't so inexpensive.

I vote too for Crystal Beach near galveston and S. Padre. not cheap, not outrageus. Need to plan in advance, good values fill up quickly. can't remember places where I've stayed but there will be DGrs that will soon come along to help.

If you stay off the beach on So Padre it is much cheaper. They also have beach houses that are one block from the beach, they aren't bad. So Padre has a free bus that runs every half hour or so, goes all over the island, to Port Isabele and back and down the beach(well, not on the sand, but on the road by the beach)
It is very touristy, Schliterbahns waterpark will be open and all kinds of tourist stuff. On the mainland is Laguna Atascosa wildlife refuge, the turtle place is on the island and the lighthouse and several museums are in Port Isabele. You can drive on the beach, the island is about 35 miles long(only about 12 miles is developed) and you can drive from tip to tip if you watch the tides(charts available). There is a narrow strip where the Gulf almost touches the Laguna and if the tide is high, you won't get back out because the water is right up to the dunes. In the summer, especially on weekends, the beach is packed with people and cars.
