I picked up 4 tubs for my brugs.Do I need to fill them with potting soil or to I use alum cans or some lightweight filler in the bottom? I may have to go back to work to support my hobby.
19 gal tubs

I hear ya Dixie! I know it's expensive filling those with potting soil. I make my own mixture with regular store bought soil & my compost for the tubs. I wouldn't put too much light weight material in the bottom though. I have used those packing peanuts in the bottom of containers and they work well also. Just don't use the starch ones..LOL
I have never used pop cans, maybe someone else has.
If too much light weight material is used on the bottom You will run the risk of it becoming Top heavy and falling over. Just a reminder from someone who has Done Did That....LOL
Packing peanuts work well until you pull the plant from the pot on a windy day and they go all over the yard. No fun then. I have used broken clay pots in the bottom of planters but 99% of the time, they are just filled with soil and I put either paper towels or coffee filters over the drain holes so the dirt doesn't water out.
