Alocasias in containers

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Growing Alocasia in plastic containers, do they prefer to be somewhat rootbound or prefer a larger pot with space to grow?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

If they are so root bound as to have the soil not hold water they must surely be potted on.. but if you can put your finger down into the soil they should be ok... never too big a pot as it will never dry out any between waterings.. this cycleing from wett o dry is a growth spurring occourance... Which Alocasia are we talking about here?
Culture-wise they cover a lot of ground.

I have some that can never get dry.
(These are mostly the smaller terrarium type)
Most though must have the cycle Gordon's speaking of.

Alocasia 'hilo beauty', 'black velvet', and 'michoriza (spelling)','green shield'. All three of them are in pots way too large for them so time to downsize. Which can never get dry? I find the 'green shield' and 'black velvet' only like to be watered after the soil is fairly dry. Not sure about the other two.

If it's macrorrhiza the pot will soon fill out no matter how big.
I dump the water to it when I remember.
It's the first one every year to spathe though I've never had it set seed.

The of the other three I have GS and had BV.

BV does much better w/ the drying technique but likes high humidity.
When it's happy it will spread rapidly.
I learned this too late.

GS I have in a case to keep the humidity up but in a lot looser soil tahn the other Alocasia I grow..
Bark and African Violet mix.
It's soil never really dries completely out.
Mine is very small so far but starting to come on strong.
