Granted...I live in a greenhouse environment...but there are times I need to help the little ones get a good start in life. Here are some of my solutions for: rooting tired thin leafed cuttings that spent too long in the mail; rooting cuttings of other types of plants that really do better in a mist house; and starting seeds. I leave the tops on so I can unscrew them and mist into the bottle...or I open it just a bit where it meets the bottom. The enclosures are NOT airtight so I don't need to relieve the moisture.
The far right bottle has Brugmansia seeds..and sprouting them this way has been FAR more successful than any other method I have used.
No BigLots? One solution
Great minds think alike Carol. Here's my version.....Tostitos Party Bowl Dip or Salsa! The bowls fit a Diet Coke bottle like a glove. And yes....I eat the dip with chips while sipping Diet Coke...LOL. You can put soil in the bowl or a small pot with the seeds. Either way the condensation runs down the sides back into the bowl.....self watering!

WOW, what a super idea. You guys are great and love your idea Karen. The snacks are a bonus!

...hey....gardners need nourishment.....
Karen...brilliant!!!
Anymore extremely inventive masterminds out there?
It's funny, wouldn't it be great if food manufacturers started to design their containers based on how gardeners can reuse them?
Those are great!
....my personal version of recycling! Has anyone used a plastic bottle (I like the cranberry juice type because they're firm, but a regular water bottle works too) as a soil scoop? This is so easy....keep the cap on, and cut across the bottom at a 45 degree angle. The cap end becomes the handle and it works like magic for scooping soil while potting!

Yes...works wonders. I use a gallon bottle of Physan cut the same way...'cause it has a small handle. :~)
Those big plastic containers used for grapes or cherries sold at Cosco work great for seed starters too. The lid is hinged-like and has a few holes in it. The bottom has holes also already. There are smaller ones for berries, but they don't hold much.
