Orchid Show

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Yesterday Jeanne and I went to Nanaimo to see the Central Vancouver Island Orchid Society show. It was great. Besides CVIOS there were displays from the Victoria Orchid Society and the Fraser Valley Orchid Society and I think one other one. I took a few pictures to share.

Here's Rhyncholaelia Digbyana. I've always liked the frills on this orchid and it has a nice fragrance in the evening I understand.

This is Dendrobium Kingianum. This is the one you bought recently isn't it Wilma?

I like Masdevallias but I find them difficult to grow. They need it cool with a breeze. This is a Masdevallia Minaret. I didn't get the last part of the name.

And I thought this Masdevallia was rather nice. I hadn't seen one before. It's called Masdevallia Datura. I'm assuming it's because the blooms look like Datura flowers. Masdevallias don't usually have such large flowers.

A closer view of that last one.

Jeanne really liked this Cattleya. I should have written the names down of all the ones I took pictures of like you did Pam.

One of the members from the Victoria Society specializes in Miltonias. He had some nice ones for sale but some even nicer ones on the Victoria Society's display table.

Another Miltonia.

And another one. They're also called Pansy Orchids for obvious reasons and they have a heavenly scent that can fill a room.

This one is Psychopsis papilio. It is also sometimes called Oncidium papilio which I think might be it's former name. I had a tiny little one of these once but unfortunately it died. I think they're really cool looking.

There were some lovely Paphiopedilums...slipper orchids. I only took a few pictures and I didn't get names. This one has very waxy looking flowers.

Another Paph.

And a Phrag.

And a Pleione. That's about it. There were so many beautiful orchids. I could have looked at them and taken pictures for a few hours I'm sure. I didn't buy any but Jeanne did. Hopefully she'll share a few pictures of her new babies. I haven't been a member of the orchid society for a couple of years so it was nice to get a chance to visit with some of the members.

Their lovely Sandy and what a wide variety! Ü Next time you will have to get the names so your pictures can be added to the Plantfiles. ;)

Sandy, these are terrific photos. Thanks for sharing them with us. The Orchids are exceptional, aren't they. My favorite one was the third Paphiopedilum you posted. Gorgeous! :D

One of the vendors had some of them for sale for $7.00 per bulb. How much did you pay for yours? He also had the Pleiones.

Winnipeg,, MB(Zone 3a)

I paid $6.50
at the garden centre.

Hey, Wilma. Are you gonna pick up Inanda and Echoes to go take in the Garter Snake Event happening there in Manitoba? Big News...made the National.

Winnipeg,, MB(Zone 3a)

No, I have never been but would like to go someday,
It is unreal all those snakes.. waking up from a long winter's nap..

I think it is about a 2 or more hour drive from my house.

Writhing snakes in clusters of passion--no, I think the orchid show would be my pick. Thanks for the pics Sandy. Lovely. I had a little orange masdevallia for about 3 years and then he just quit. I do love that Phychopsis papillio! Aptly named, I think. I have fairly good luck with my orchids except Phals--which are supposed to be easy but then I can make puff pastry but burn cookies? Who knows? Now, Jeanne, what did you buy?

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Never mind the snakes. Far more important to talk about the prairie crocus. All in bloom now. Will have to go visit The Living Prairie to see them.

There is a sod house there too. Looking forward to seeing that.

Inanda - always interested in alternative housing.

another beautiful day here in Wpg..

Ah, are we talking Pulsatilla? Post pics, please.
My Aunt Gladys lived in a soddy! She was a spinster farmer in (or just out) of Strasbourg, Sask. House cool in summer and warm in winter. Wonderful thing--Window ledges 2 ft in depth. When I last visited in 1969, she still did not trust "the electricity" and kept all her gas lanterns on accordion hinged wooden brackets. She was the first one in Sask to bring in Charolais cattle, and would simply hire farmhands as required. Small, wiry and INDEPENDENT. A true character.
Enjoy your trip.

Lovely orchids, they almost look to good to be real.

Dawn, my grandmother was raised in a sod house near Weyburn SK. I never saw it, but remember her telling of sweeping the dirt floors.

Aha, Linda, perhaps we are related. I surely hope you have nearly recuperated.
