Today I visited a huge palm nursery and the grower said that he waters all his seedlings with Kelp: forming good root systems and vigorous plants.
Does anyone know if the properties in Kelp are the same as other seaweed extracts?
TIA,
Carol
Kelp/Seaweed?
It is my understanding that kelp and seaweed are the same.
Last year I used a product called SeaMax it is a kelp based fert. I didn't see much difference from the others we use but it certianly did not hurt anything.
It did attract yellow jackets & looked a lot like antifreeze in the watering can tho, weird! Bj
That's odd, BJ, but I have never seen that brand. The liquid kelps I have used have always been very dark brown liquid. I did see a difference, too. I had things bloom last year that had never bloomed before after I sprayed with kelp.
I use MaxiCrop whenever I transplant and also use it as a foliar spray. Mine is a very dark brown in color.
I use liquified seaweed(Maxicrop). Have seen excellent results! Mellingers stopped mailorder of it, so don't know where I'll get it now.
Here's a link for your Maxicrop
http://store.yahoo.com/basementshaman/seaweedextract.html
I have Maxicrop and have seen very little results, compared to the Seaweed Extract in the Insect Killing Soap (Safer brand). I've tried the same soap, without the seaweed extract and it works for insects but the plants don't 'dance' they way they do with the Seaweed Extract. I wish I could find the exact stuff but, so far, no luck...
8ft. Thank you for the link.
I need 1 gallon. Have to figure liter size/cost/postage.
Hibiscus, I just threw one up as an example. There were many hits when I googled it except the manufacturer doesn't sell from the their site. I just went and looked again and saw 23.79 for a gal but their ltr was 10.79. A little snoopin' around and you should be able to find what you want or maybe somewhere close.
Gloria have you tried looking at a Lowe's near you? This is where I always purchase my MaxiCrop liquid seaweed. I wish I could remember what I pay for it but I can't.
I looked it up and paid $33.71 total for Gallon.from Mellingers last fall. Frannie: have not seen it at Lowes' but might ask. $23.79 plus postage sounds reasonable. Will check them all out.
Thank you both.
Let me dig up the link where I bought powdered kelp much cheaper than you can buy it liquid.
http://www.noamkelp.com/cgi-bin/qwizard
It isn't cheap because you have to buy it in a very large (25 lb) pail of powder, but if you figure how much it makes, it is about 1/3 the cost of buying liquid kelp like MaxiCrop.
Thank you Mary. Even if I still buy liquid it is 5 Gal for $65. I am paying $33.71 for 1 gallon. I will keep this in my favorites and order one or the other next time.
OhGood
I was trying to figure out where it was going to come from this year... I love it ... it gives a deep green plant thickness to the leaves.. beefey looking... I've allways bought the maxicrop as a power it seemed to provide a better value.. but you had to stir it a bit more than the liquid.. I figured it had to be cheeper and easier for them to transport it..
I love the story when I read it 25 years ago or so... pure unpoluted waters of the artic seas.. growing this coldwater kelp.. harvested and concentrated into the maxicrop... I could only imagint the diffrent minerals and compounds available.. after all kelp is the largest growing of any plant.... Gordon
Hi, I'm so glad to find this thread. I've been an organic gardener for about 5 years, and was concerned that I would not be able to raise Brugs organically. The other threads I've read talk about stuff that doesn't sound very appetizing-lots of chemicals. Unless I misunderstood what they were saying. I have about two dozen antique roses, herbs etc and I know organics work. I've been asking for organic advice and am very glad to find out that seaweed extract works. I buy mine from Gardenville in San Antonio. I would appreciate any other organic advice you could send my way.
Hi all - Your information is all terrific and helpful.
Brugnanny - the fellow who puts this concoction together that I use says that Seaweed and Kelp are the same when used in Ferts. I can buy granulated kelp for about 70$ for a 25lb bag. There is another thing called Algon or Algeon that is Norweigan kelp which sells for about $80 for a 50lb bag...and the application is 250.bs per acre. He is a firm believer in, and so am I, in Granusol which is basically all the micronutrients in granules...about 1tsp. per plant, sprinkled on the soil.
We used this Granusol when we first bought our orchards...the trees where more than chlorotic...they were pathetic. 1 tsp. of Granusol ever 3-4 months and...Presto...great color, great trees. So, I think I am going to stick with DH's cocktail; and see what happens.
Stay tuned. LOL
AlohaHoya, Oh boy, I don't know how helpful my info could be much help. I forgot you live in Hawaii. Gardenville ships their stuff all over TX but I don't know about Hawaii!
DH said to tell you that if you ship us some Mango wood we'll send you some Liquid Seaweed.LOL
Isn't Mango wood beautiful?!!!! DH did a floor in Curly Koa...nice!
Unfortunately...shipping is what kills me!!! Using what I have is good...
Thanks to everyone, again...
Carol
AlohaHoya, Are you woodworkers, too? My DH just read your answer to mine, and said "OOOOOH, send us your scraps!"
We don't do floors, except our own (and only once). Mary Lee
I buy liquid seaweed concentrate from GardenVille and its about $13 per gallon. I think its a few tablespoons to a gallon of water. I mix some other goodies with it and use it in a hose-end sprayer.
