I think I had a misleading subject before (asking for a species book). What I really want is recommendations for a good wildflower field guide for Ontario, and for the Atlantic Provinces. Or, just as helpful, field guides to stay away from! Something with good pictures.

Thanks for that....do you know the book personally? Is it all it's touted to be? Certainly sounds fantastic--all that, in small format! Funny, I checked Chapters last week when I was ordering some other books and it didn't come up. (The "free shipping over $39" gave the source away!) Spent forever wandering through their listings, too.

You're welcome :)

edited to say I thought I had the right review but will have to keep looking.

It's a recomended text at the University of Toronto:

Organization of this course (2004/2005)

* Text
* Course outline
* Instructor
* Marking scheme
* Field trips and labs
* Assignments
* Course delivery and costs
* Index to website content
* Past exams are available from B.U.D.S.

Course Text:

Judd, W. S., Campbell, C. S., Kellogg, E. A., Stevens, P. F. & M. J. Donoghue (2002). Plant Systematics - A Phylogenetic Approach, 2nd ed. Sunderland MA, Sinauer Associates, Inc. Students should note that this text includes a CD-ROM with images of representative plants from virtually all families discussed in the book (and hence in this course). These images will be used to supplement those available from the collections of the Vascular Plant herbarium (TRT) of the Royal Ontario Museum.
Recommended Texts:

NOTE: students who seek a concise review of the comparative morphology covered in early lectures and labs should consult Raven, Evert & Eichhorn (1999) Biology of Plants, 6 th ed. This is the text used in BOT251, and used copies of this or earlier editions are available in the library system, or for sale, used.

From what I can tell Quill and Quire hasn't done a review on it yet.

This is what a reviewer at Amazon had to say:

Detailed but difficult to use, July 5, 2004
Reviewer: Julie Reid from Cambridge, Ontario Canada
Tbis is a wonderfully detailed book on wildflowers, but for someone just beginning it is necessary to learn much more about flower structure and classification than a beginner,like myself, finds comfortable or easy. Although not as detailed, the book "Ontario Wildflowers: 101 Wayside Flowers" is much simpler to use, and vastly superior for the beginner.

You could always ask your local library to interlibrary loan in, the two above mentioned books, so you could check them out.
