Golden Sage, Beach Salvia, Bruin of Sandsalie, Brown Salvia (Salvia africana-lut
Beautiful burnished color. Do you grow this in your garden?
Yes I do grow this in my garden. It is my favorite of all my Salvias probably because the color is so unusual.
I just remembered what it remind me of, lion's tail flowers.
And that's another favorite of mine......I grow the Leonotis menthifolia http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/26099/ which is more compact than L. leonorus and doesn't become woody with foliage loss at the bottom. It's evergreen here in 10a and is just now coming back into bloom.
What are those flowers of??
That's actually the remaining calyx from the flower as it matures. They stay on the plant for a long period of time and give it that apparent "second" bloom. This is a wonderful sturdy sage that can stand up to almost anything. As the name implies it originates in Africa. For more information see this link:

Hi Happenstance,
you do have some lovely Salvias in your garden, I think San Francisco must have a similar climate to Sydney?
Anyway another South African lovely which is similar is S. lanceolata, I have grown and it's nice and compact for those of us whose gardens are too small to fit everything in (just one more...)
That's a lovely one, just to my taste! I prefer these odd-ball Salvias, because they seem to go so well with the succulents that I like too.
I think you must be a bit warmer than we are here....maybe more like San Diego which is several hundred miles south of here. But, according to this map (below) you have a climate similar to the Cape in South Africa which is often compared to SF weather. There are so many micro-climates here in the Bay Area, that friends who live just a few miles away can't grow some of the plants that I do.
I'm going to a local grower tomorrow who also sells retail. She carries a wide variety of unusual Salvias and I will be sure to keep my eyes open for this one of yours. :-)

They did look like flowers! That's why I thought you were posting a whole other plant. Awesome plant!
It really is a great plant. If you check this other image in the PlantFiles, you can clearly see the calyx when it is still green.
