African Blue Basil

Goshen, OH(Zone 6a)

Someone wants to give me some african blue basil, has anyone ever seen it and how does it grow, is it invasive does anyone have a picture of it? well I guess that is three questions LOL.

I grew it in a planter box several years ago, and it was gorgeous, but boy did it get big! The little plant just kept branching out and got over 2 feet tall, as I recall. Lovely flowers that I think were blue-lavender, and the foliage had some purple in it. If you let it go to seed, I suppose it could reseed itself the following year, but I've never heard of any basil being a nuissance.... deadheading would take care of it. The flavor was a little strong for my taste, so for me it was an ornamental rather than a cooking basil.

BTW, PlantFiles is a good source of this sort of info too.... check http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1148/index.html

Definitely take your "someone" up on their offer!

it's a perennial here. might be in your zome, too. it does NOT seed. roots in water. can grow indoors. looks pretty next to mexican mint marigold, which is also a perennial.

I think I might try this plant sounds interesting thanks for the info.

Thanks -- couldn't remember anything about the seeds, so makes sense that there weren't any! It *would* make a pretty indoor plant. Rooting in water is one of the things I love about other basils, mints, etc!
