I'm wondering if it is too soon to plant cannas in zone 5a? We are having days in the 60's and 70's, but could still get close to freezing at night. Would they be OK if planted fairly deep or is it better to wait a few weeks?

When to Plant Cannas
Susan, I am in zone 5 too, and i am afraid to put my cannas outside yet. it is still frosting here, got down to 27.5 degrees this morning. If you do decide to put them outside i would have a cover handy in case weatherman predicts frost. Donnas
Thanks! I was afraid I might be pushing the season a little, but it does seem like it's going to be an early summer here.

I just planted mine yesterday. As long as they are just the bulbs from last year and are planted about 4-6" deep they'll be fine. They usually are able to choose whether or not its warm enough to sprout (if they haven't already, as long as they were in a cool place). Sometimes here they'll get up a few inches and then there will be a predicted frost. When that happens I cover them and that's that. As long as they haven't sprouted a couples inches or more you don't need to cover them. For me, it's worth a few nights of work to get flowers earlier and get the plants rooting.
