Great shot Gardenwife. I'm wondering if this is a catkin. It's not as pretty as yours but has similar structure.

Thank you for this photo, Gardenwife. Usually, catkins give us a major charge around here in winter when we walk on nearby river trails - the metamorphasis from December into May of catkins from those little stubs to ethereal hanging pillars of light and pollen on willows, hazels, hornbeams and alders (forgot what the fifth genus having catkins is), while so much of the visible world "appears" dormant is surprisingly beautiful. Well, we're easily surprised with some things even if we've seen 'em 100 times.

Another gorgeous winter event in woods around here in February are the colorful spores of fungi! So unexpected.

Yes, indeed! They're such happy surprises to find!

Some of that willow's branches are fully leafed out now, but others still have catkins along them and just bursts of leaves at the whips' tips.
